Molly is due her spot-on on Monday - the info says it is safe to use on pregnant bitches (she is 5+ weeks) but I'm sure I've read somewhere that it's best not to.

Our cats are due theirs on the 7th July but one of them came in this morning with fleas on his ears!! I'm quite upset about this as I've worked hard over the years to avoid getting fleas! Needless to say both cats have been treated and banished from the house whilst I've washed all bedding etc etc

So a couple of questions -

Do you use Frontline on your pregnant bitches?

Do animals build up a resistance to Frontline?

Many thanks!

I *think* Frontline is advised not to go on pregnant bitches but I don't use flea treatments myself so I'm not sure - seriously, just give a vet a ring, they will tell you. I wouldn't, but then I worm my bitches before mating and don't worm them again until after the puppies are weaned as I am paranoid about putting chemicals they don't need into them when preggers... but if you have a flea problem there (poor you!) I would certainly check with a vet as its such a crutial thing I would hate to speculate...

Hi Nicky

I, personally, do not allow any chemicals anywhere near my pregnant bitches. Everything is done before they are mated. I have a real hang up about flea treatment, worm treatment etc. while they are in whelp whatever is printed on the labels.

As for Frontline Spot On becoming less effective I am not sure about this do you mean on the cats? I would think it is just that they have been very busy hunting and picked up a few visitors!

Regards

Thanks Di! I'm going to ring the vet on Monday anyway but thought I'd pass it by good old LF in the meantime!

The Frontline literature says "Frontline spot-on can be used in breeding, pregnant and lactating bitches" but like you I'm nervous about the chemicals for the obvious reasons.

Molly definately doesn't have fleas now but with her prevention running out any day it only takes one. Confused

I know that you shouldn't use Frontline on pregnant cats, so would presume it would be the same for dogs.

Thanks Jill, like you I did what I thought would be last worming and flea treatment just before she was mated. As we have never had fleas before and I treat the cats I thought it unlikely that Molly would get them for the last bit of her pregnancy and whilst she is feeding the pups.

Hence my question about resistance - the cats should have been protected for another week so for some reason this hasn't worked. We'll see what the vets says and I'll ring the manufacturers as well.

I am about to COOK a curry - so this could get messy Wink

Where is my corkscrew... always the FIRST ingredient of any meal here Wink

Right.... the vet said....

Herbie, the cat, must have come in straight after having his head in contact with a flea infested animal. His previous Frontline treatment would have immediately set to work on the fleas and have rendered them infertile and then dead within 24 hours. The fact that I treated him again with another dose of Frontline would not have done him any harm.

So even if one had got on to Molly there would have been no consequences.

He also said that Frontline is safe to use in pregnancy and lactating as it remains on the surface of the skin and doesn't enter the blood stream at all. Apparently some breeders apply it to their bitch a week before whelping to avoid any chance of infestation of the puppies which would mean an uncomfortable and unhealthy start until they were old enough to be treated.

But we've made the decision not to use it on her. I think as long as the cats are up to date we should be ok.
