What exactly do you mean by high baby gates?

Okay so my bitch could get pregnant...yes, it's a possibility but there are ways around that if worse came the worst. What damage could they cause each other on top of getting pregnant?

Damage can include penile tears and splits, vaginal tears and more usually, the bitch turning on the dog and biting and ripping into him, even if completely out of character usually.

That is the worst case senarios. Dogs will of course more often stand there or just drag each other about a bit till the tie breaks. However if EITHER partner panics, and doesn't just try and tug themselves away but flips on their back and/or spins it can be extremely damaging indeed for either - as I am sure you can imagine a dogs willy is back to front twisted slightly upwards, if the bitch lays down, especially quickly, and ESPECIALLY if she then flips around she can cause a lot of damage and scare the hell out of both of them in the process ....

So that is the worst case senario. The problem is that we have domesticated dogs. Wild dogs and dogs not used to the support and comfort of humans taking control seem to cope, of course.... however our cossetted, unnatural hounds seem to lose sight of nature and natural instincts and often are extremely hard to mate or panic like hell when being mated.

Hi Nicola

I've measured them for you. A standard babygate is about 32 inches. My high baby gate is 42 inches high (I think it was called a dog gate not a baby gate but its the same principle).

As far as hurting themselves - I guess you mean if they get together and tie, in which case you just have to hold them together until they release. I have to say my castrated dog did manage to mate and tie with one of my bitches (I didn't think he had it in him!!) but I just quietly held them together until they had finished no harm done but now both entire and castrated dogs are separated.

High Baby Gates - well sort of what it says, nortmal kiddie safety gates that you would put at the bottom or top of the stairs to stop them tumbling, but a bit higher. I think you can search on extra high safety gates or something like that - have a play with the wording on google.

A normal 3 foot babygate is nothing to a labrador so I use 4 foot 6" ones during the girls seasons if i can.

But to show I am happy to give the rights and wrongs of all this I am very very careful and control my dogs with a rod of iron when the girls are standing for mating BUT I have myself had a whoops litter ten years ago and a mismating about two years ago resulting in a mismate jab.... and the whoops litter was an experienced stud dog jumping an old hand 'loves to be mated' bitch, he entered her for maybe 5 seconds before I pulled them apart.... no tie, no real time, and she was up the duff Wink One puppy only, but up it none the less Wink

We called it the immaculate conception but even so shows, it was the postman who let the dog out!

So a high babygate would be okay? I have enough rooms/halls I could easily do that!! No chance of a slip up with the postman - we have a letter box on the wall outside!

It would. Its not so much the actual chance of a pregnancy or accidental mating that makes it such a stress and worry but the change in the dogs.... the vocalness, panting, off their food, pacing and barging about when they are usually calm and quiet... even when you know its normal Wink

Maybe if he is only with you for siz months you can work it so he doesn't hit a season?

I have two choices, one to stay here for good and one on loan. My preference would be the one for good, though he is a bit older. Too many risks (French diseases for a UK born dog) to take on the responsibility of someone else's dog for 6 months. Either way I would hope he might arrive (if I decide to go ahead) just post season though neither Blue nor Coco as showing ANY signs of a season yet. Confused Coco normally hs a 7 month cycle and Blue, well her female relations have been know to have their first season at anything up to 17 months! Shocked Maybe Coco is hanging in there for her?!!

Lol possibly Laughing Clover had her first season at 14½ months - which actually brought Hally in a month early (so other way around for me) - but the timing suited me much better Very Happy

No male dogs to worry about yet though Shocked but somewhere I no doubt will be at some point in the future Confused

Coco is up to 8½ months without season now (and no phantom this time)! And I kept dawdling about having her spayed because I thought a season was imminent. Blummin' dogs.
