I am considering another dog (one possibly on loan for 6 months and the other for keeps) but they are "he's". One has been stood at stud before but has lived in a mixed dog/bitch household for all his life (he's quite young so I expect the hormones will still be rampant) the other is a youngster who also lives in a mixed dog/bitch household. They both have all their teeth - hurrah!!

I have one spayed bitch, one due to be spayed after her next season (which is already 2 months late) and one which I will hang on for a while to see how things go - she has yet to have a seaon (come on Blue HURRY UP!).

Exactly how difficult is it to keep dogs and bitches apart while bitches are in season, in the home I mean.

Any advice? Is this a REALLY bad idea?

Hi Nicola, I suppose how difficult to keep them seperate would depend on the layout of your home, But with all that land you have, would kenneling not be an option ? Good luck with whatever you choose to do Very Happy

I seem to remember Kay (Kayc) saying that her boy Bailey went on "holiday" when any of her bitches were in season.

As the lad has already tasted what its really for it`d drive him nuts I`d have thought, to smell your girls in season and not be able to get at them Smile

Its not easy hand on heart, not easy at all. there is about a 7 day window where the boys erratic panting moaning whining pacing and sometimes barking behaviour can drive you mad.

It can be done but you need to be very tolerant. Never think that shutting them apart fools anyone Wink Infact i find babygates better as the boys seem to settle better when they can see the girls even if they can't get to them.

However you need large babygates and a non jumper and only when you are around Wink

IF Blue is only going to have one season then you could jab her when she comes in to stop the season if it would only be the once. Its a possibility but not ideal or desireable.

The fact this dog is a regular stud dog will help, he will not be that bothered and can run with her until about day 5 or 6, then probably won't get worked up till she ovulates. BUT once she HAS the problem comes in that if he does shoulder barge through he will be on and in much faster than a dog who has 'no idea where the hole is!'.

Even kenneling she will wee on the same ground they run on, its a red rag to a bull....

So its not impossible, a lot of us do it, but it does drive you mental from about day 10 to about day 20...

Di

Thanks Di, I knew it had to be possible otherwise how do breeders cope? Coco is due to be spayed, Blue will not be spayed until I find out for sure if I will be able to breed with her or not.

Well a lot have, like you, quite a bit of land so that if the boys are noisey it doesn't matter, they just tolerate it. They only let the boys out of their kennels when the girls are in theirs or shut in the house and work it like that.

Oh, and sorry to say, quite a lot of mixed household breeders get quite familiar with the mismate jab or 'whoops litters'. ;-( Wink

Hmmm, I have heard fo a mismate jab BUT also what worries me is if they did happen to mate and tie, could they do any damage to each other (other than for the bitch to get up the duff?) I've read the stuff abaut standing a dog at stud and a lot seems to be involved in the way of supervision but if they happend to get together by accident...what would be the worst case scenario, discounting a possible pregnancy?

Hi Nicola

Like Di I use the high baby gates method which works very well as my dog is better if he can see the girls. Plus I tend to take him around with me in the car as he loves travelling with me and forgets all about the girls back home!!

I would just say that you do have to be on the alert at all times. It only takes one second of lack of concentration on gate or door opening for him to be in there like a shot Embarassed. So if you have anyone else in the house you have to be very very careful cos they will forget!!!!!!!!

Best wishes
