i would love to be able to train brodie out of pulling on the lead but with 2 toddlers always in tow, it is not possible to do a proper "training walk" with the 3 of them together!

so i have just ordered a canny collar (after reading many posts on here) and am wondering if you always have to use the canny from here to eternity? Confused

or does your dog realise that walking to heel is nice and gets him where he wants to go without pulling - with or without the canny?

hope this makes sense..

thanks!

i've got a canny and i use it at GT's and similar over stimulation situations but i've got him woalking really nicely on a flat collar and it really is working (all thanks to helen Wink and her brill advice)

so i;d say use it when you need to and then use flat collar and work on that when u have time... even if for just 5 minutes several times a day... you don;t really have to go anywhere. we walk up and down the road!!!

and then use canny when u need more control and actually do have to go somewhere!

HTH

I use a canny and for me it was an absolute god send, we got Jake at the age of 15 months in January and I dont think he had ever walked on a lead, he had no idea, except to pull like a steam train, and I just couldn't hold him, even hubby struggled if he saw another dog, so we bought a canny and my god what a difference, The thing I liked with them was they don't pull his head side ways but works more like the reins on a horse, I now drop the nose band and he walks really well, not perfect all the time but so much better, I only loop the band over his nose now if he starts to yank, and I cant get him to sit still and wait for the distraction to pass, which is usually because he wants to chase after another dog to play but we are working on it LOL
My hope is he will be free to walk on a regular collar soon, my intention was only ever to use it as an aide to his training, which it has done very well so far.

I hope that helps

Hello Bobobobs!

I don't have children, so can't offer any advice there Wink , but as far as Brodie is concerned, the only thing that will teach him to walk on a loose lead is training. If you really want to make a difference, you will have to find a few minutes each day for a short training walk, just you and Brodie.

I do believe that the canny collar is useful though, I have one and use it (or a halti) at times when there is likely to be so much stimulation as to blow the dogs mind and then you get no sense from them, and it stops a nasty battle ensuing, with the dog pulling into his collar and choking himself! Rolling Eyes

Am off to bed but if you can have a look at some of the relevant threads in the training section, describing the 'turning round and walking the other way' method (should have a better name shouldn't it!! Laughing ) or I'll happily PM you, or I'll try and post it on here tomorrow.

Hope this helps, basically I'm saying that whilst the canny collar is useful when you have a big dog that pulls hard, it doesn't teach anything on it's own, you will need to combine this with regular and consistent training sessions.

Good on you for wanting to do this, it will make your walks so much more enjoyable, for both you and Brodie.

thanks for all your responses.

i do intend to keep up with brodie's training - my dh takes him to an obedience class in which he is good as gold but a lot of the exercises are off lead and so not really practice for walks - on an actual walk he is loop the loop!

i think that the advice to use the canny when it is needed sounds good. i would not like to be in the position where the ONLY way to walk my dog was with a canny on.

will try as much as possible to train him out of it, but at only 6 mths, his walking time is still limited. (i tried the walking in the other direction thing out with the kids and got into all sorts of difficulties lol!)

maybe i need to take him out, just for 5 mins in the evening in addition to our "family" walk..

the thing that prompted me to try a training collar was that someone said elsewhere, "well if you never LET your dog pull you on a flat collar, then you will never get pulled" which is great if all you have to concetrate on is the dog but in day to day terms, it is not practical for me to have abortive or "walk the other way" walks when the kids are keen to get to the woods and play!

thanks for reading and once the canny arrives, i will let you know how we get on

we used the canny for about 4 - 6 months and then we went to dog training without it a few times to test the water so to speak & then we just stopped using it, jansen does pull a bit but he is growing out of it.
