I have 4 Labs, one of which is 6 years old, a yellow female. Last summer, she had an episode while she was swimming where she almost drowned...she lost control of her back legs and couldn't paddle...we got her out of the water and she couldn't support herself on her back legs; she was very scared and trembling, but fully cognizant. Within 15 minutes, she was fine and tearing around the yard with her buddies. This has happened 2 more times since then (Saturday being the most recent). We took her to the vet the last time she had one in November, had xrays, full exam, etc. and the vet thought he saw evidence of arthritis. We put her on heavy duty glucosamine, etc. and she had been fine until her episode this weekend...it sounds exactly like the above descriptions. I thought it could be EIC, but now I'm not sure. It just tears my heart out because she gets so scared!!! Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Confused

Hecklabs, there is a fairly straightforward DNA mouth swab test for EIC, so it would be very straightforward to test your dog to establish their EIC status if it would help you at all put your mind at ease, or feel you are doing something positive.

If you google EIC testing in labradors links to the testing centre will come up. One such centre is here: http://www.laboklin.co.uk/laboklin/showGeneticTest.jsp?testID=8152

Hi Hecklabs - welcome to LF.

Sorry to hear that your girl is having these problems.

As Di says - it is straightforward and relatively inexpensive to rule out EIC and I would certainly suggest you run this DNA test.

If you want more info re Monty's paroxysmal dyskinesia - please feel free to email me
