So, i love wednesdays as its my day off work and i get to drive over to the fields with bailey..... Its a huge huge amount of land but very popular amoung dog walkers - there was loads there today as expected - but i do love it there as bailey gets to play with loads of different dogs - i really do enjoy his walks over there - as he can have a really good run after his ball and unless he's told to - he never runs off for other dogs and when he is off with other dogs i only need to call him once and he comes bounding back
Well after a good 45 minutes walking around, i decided to pull back round to the carpark - theres usually 10+ cars on the car park, which is just a gravely patch of land and right next to that is the country road - which is a 60mph road i might add!
Well i always put bailey on his lead when i get close to the car park, as i notice alot of owners let their dogs stay off and they run around the car park.... a man near the carpark saw me put my lead on bailey and said 'its a shame you cant let him offlead - i bet he wants a good run'
I told him he's been offlead all the way around the park and that i always put his lead back on closer to the road/car-park.... he then said 'isnt he very well trained then' - i told him he was well trained but that no dog is 100%.... then he inturupted me and said 'WELL MINE IS' 'maybe if you work harder your's will be too'
I was gobsmacked this man who didnt even know me or my dog was telling me this - i told him no dog in the world was 100% trained and it only took that 1% for it to decide to bolt after a dog, a bird, a leaf or anything and it simply wasnt worth the risk on the car park so close to the road....
Well he still proceeded to act as if he had the world best trained dog and mine was some sort of horrid untrainable creature
I obviously wasnt getting anywhere with him so i simply said (dont quote me - im just going on what i can remember
'this is my dog, and he is very well trained and very happy, but more importantly my dog is SAFE because I as a responsible owner take things like the bloody 60mph road just at the back of you - seriously.... so you keep your dog offlead and proceed to have your nose up your own rear end and i'll proceed to enjoy my walks with my dog SAFELY
Bailey added his imput by cocking his leg up his car (no im SERIOUS) i couldnt believe it..... i said before getting into my car 'sorry - its this blooming untrainable dog i have - nevermind'
rant over - thanks!
rofl now i read it back - i wouldnt have said any of those things a year ago.... i only wish i could tell door to door salesmen to bugger off too lol
Too right for having a go at him M ! How dare he say that, when you are just caring about the safety of your dog.
Someone in the village told me about a dog who the owner thought was 100% with its training just like the man you mentioned. One day when waiting to cross the road the owner saw someone he knew so waved... which the dog thought was the signal to cross and he got run over, so you can never be too careful.
Glad Bailey got his own back too with a pee up the car WTG!
Oh don't you just love it when you meet a "know-all". It almost makes you hope that his dog runs in the road and the man gets knocked over chasing it, doesn't it (ooo too many bad thoughts).
I know what you mean about Door to door salesmen too....I will defend my dogs, kids, friends and family to the hilt like a lioness....yet when I open my front door to a Salesman I get all stupidly embarrassed and instead of just saying "no thank you", they end up in my house drinking tea and getting me to sign on the dotted line...I'm a hopeless case .
WTG M safety in mind at all times well done! I too think my boys are well trained but would do exactly the same as you & put them on the lead anywhere near a road. & not for just their sake i would hate for them to cause an accident of any sort
Pat on the back for Bailey too
