I think that Pud's claws are long - we do some pavement walking but mostly off lead at the beach or in the woods. I have asked for them to be clipped in the vets on a couple of occassions but have always been advised to do more pavement walking! I might get myself some clippers and have a go!

Rather than clip claws yourself, or pay the vet to do it, the way I have always done it is to use a large metal nail file - much easier, no chance of cutting into those tendons in the claws, and just as effective

Hi - I had a Lhasa with black 'nails' - the thing which helps is to look at the underside of the 'nail' - you will see the quick is the round area on the underside. If you clip to avoid this you should be fine. There is a website which actually shows you how to do this - the link is http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientED/dog_nails.asp it gives you pics to guide you.
When I trimmed my dogs nails I laid him on his side so I could see properly - I started this when he was a pup and erred on the side of caution always to avoid any pain - he loved being groomed (and there was a lot of grooming on a daily basis with a Lhasa usually an hour and a half a day when in full coat) and never minded having his nails done. When he was a puppy he was high energy! But when being groomed he was relaxed and happy.
I also keep two indoor cats and cut their claws which grow extremely quickly - having done this since they were kittens they tolerate it and never go for me. If you approach it confidently they will feel re-assured.
I hope all goes well.
