Karen . OMG i had never thought someon could do that. I guess the only way around it (without distinguishing marks) is to only issue certs to micro-chipped dogs.
How would you personally define the difference between a large scale breeder and a puppy farmer?
If there are no animal welfare issues with a puppy farm is it really any different at all to a large scale breeder? And therefore is it wrong? (just playing devils advocate here - tin hat on ready )
I think BOTH are wrong! Or, I should say, "potentially wrong", as I don't think you can really generalise every large scale breeder into the same pot. But, in my opinion, is there actually much difference between a large scale commercial breeder and a puppy farm - no doubt they are both in it for the love of the money and NOT for the love of the dogs. Just because one may have a "good name" associated with the breed, personally I don't think it make them much (if any better) better than the true puppy farms.
To be fair I'd struggle to understand why a good breeder with a few good show bitches would want to plan to have 5 or more litters in a year - surely this would just be a nightmare! (you'd constantly have puppies, all year round)
Lol, it would be a nightmare for me, I am panicking over ONE litter
But I do know, it can, and sometimes does happen, and I am sure the reasons for it are many. It could be to do with the age of the bitch having her first litter, or many other factors.
When Clover was born, the breeder had mated, and had two litters within a few days of each other - but their experience stems back since before I was even a twinkle in my parents eyes (and believe me that is a LONG TIME), and knowing how successful the breeder is, who are we to challenge the knowledge they have acquired without greater knowledge ourselves
There are and always have been some terrible puppy farms around. Some not so bad gradually get more and more dogs so conditions gradually deteriorate, often imperceptibly until the conditions are as bad or worse than the worst.
No need for tin hats! Yes, is size bad? There is certainly the economy of scale to consider. The first litter bred is always going to be far more expensive than the second. Many of the expenses are once in a lifetime expenses. Then comes feeding. Bulk purchasing can reduce that no end. Vets fees again. Many things a small breeder might need to contact their vet over the big breeder has seen so many times that they know just how to treat it.
Then comes socialising. A big kennel may employ a kennel maid for the day to day running of the kennel. These pups may in fact get more human company that a single pet litter!! Even using your own stud dog on your own bitches can be acceptable. The late Gwen Broadly (Sandylands) and Didi Hepworth (Poolstead) often used their own dogs. These people had several totally different lines in their kennels so were able to use a dog from one line on a bitch of another so there would be Sandylands to Sandylands or Poolstead to Poolstead but the dogs would still be pure outcrosses.
No, I don’t think size alone equates to a puppy farm. There is more involved than size alone. And this is the big problem.
I've heard about a puppy farmer who would take the same bitch to the vet for eye tests but saying it was a different dog
Oh yes, this happens. Then there is the Phantom Puppy. Register one more puppy than was in the litter and you have a whole spare set of paperwork! Imagine what you can do with that! Breed on consecative seasons for example. One litter goes on one set of papers and the next on the other lot. The KC then believes the breeder is not breaking the year between litters rule so registers all the pups.
i was going to mention that alot of pf use all sorts of tactics to bend the rules so they regester pups with kc u beat me to it so it looks from the outside all above board making it difficult to regulate
