We must have been very lucky with our stud dog he never had any troubles at all. He was occasionally a bit shy but leave him alone to watch telly ahd he did the job without supervision. We had quite a few visiting bitches too and never had much trouble. We did ocasionally have to stand him on a box if the bitch was a lot bigger but mostly it was all very civilised and easy. Never missed with a pregnancy either. Every bitch mated had pups. He didnt always chose to mate them though as one or two came at the wrong time.
Thing I hated most about holding him or the bitch was I always ended up stinking. His biggest litter was to a big bitch scanned not in whelp who delivered 10. Smallest was to my own bitch a litter of 4. He was a CKCS papered and at the time had current health tests. It was before MRI testing was even dreamt about though. His pups all lived to a ripe old age and a friend has his daughter, grandaughter great grandaughter and recently has kept a great great grandson to show and stand at stud eventually. All are heart eye and hip tested and as they are a long line of descendants will all be given free MRI scans in a research program that is going on. Non show any sign of syrynx though. Bizzarly My husband had to have a syrinx surgery a few years ago he says he knows how the poor cavaliers must feel LOL
I know this happens and I just can't understand why people leave the dog and bitch to get on with it Maybe I am still a bit raw from Bailey's last mating on Friday when for the very first time we had a bitch try and flip onto her back during the tie. It was very scary for me and the bitch owner and if I hadn't been there, Bailey and the bitch would have been in serious trouble.
Sorry perhaps I should explain the leave him to watch telly I literal meant him not us we did of course keep a weather eye on proceedings otherwise how would we be able to witness the mating and tie, He just preferred not to be obviously watched had there been trouble it would have been seconds before we got to him. With the Newfoundland we had only our own bitches and we held both, Same with the Golden retrievers and German shepherds. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since we started and stopped breeding dogs. We had the cavalier as our last dog since him we have only had bitches and have recently had no puppies at all. We may or may not have a litter from Willow but it will only be with all health tests in place and not for a couple of years anyway so who knnows what will happen in the meantime. She is only four months old and may or may not pass the tests although she is from tested parents
Hi Mistral, sorry misunderstood your post, but it is still very surprising how many people do just leave their dogs to get on with it. I know a lady who took her bitch to be mated and the stud dog owner insisted that both dogs were left alone in the paddock to mate and during the tie, the bitch started to run around the paddock, dragging the poor dog behind her!
I always think its pretty important to teach a stud dog to accept someone close up, possibly hands on, for those matings when help *is* needed. For me, the most annoying dog in the world is that which won't get on with the job when someone is trying to assist. Especially if you'd driven miles for him to only need a quick helping hand to get it done, but him not allowing it by backing off. Turning all bashful
The best matings happen before you even have a chance to kneel down The worst would take forever, if you left them to it, with the bitch used as a springboard for the dogs poor aim
