Hi,
I'm just starting out breeding my choc lab. Awaiting KC affix. I would like to set up a website. Does anyone know how i should go about it. Can anyone recommend anyone they have used???? and how much is it likely to cost?
One of our members on here designs websites I think... hopefully she might see your post and give you some idea about where to start/costs etc. or you might want to pm her - it is sue51
When I was setting up to have my litter, I used the freebie at Wanadoo (now Orange) I then later went to www.moonfruit.com and built one there. I paid around £20 to have the adverts removed, I also registered with Champdogs and done a link to my website from there
I work in web admin. I have my own (personal) website, I also do one for my hubby and one for my dog. (Hmmm.... I obviously don't love my Hamster very much coz I never bought him his own domain! LOL)
Do you want to have your own named site? EG www.yourkennelaffix.com (or .co.uk or .net etc)?
Here's a good start:
Go to any hosting service provider (I use www.parcom.net for my personal sites).
Pay them US$15 per year (but you'll need to buy your first domain name for 2 years minimum, so us$30 for 2 years) to register your own website name.
Then when you own it, you need to put something on it. To do this, you need to have "space" somewhere to do this... again I pay Parcom to host my actual files on their servers. This costs me the grand sum of US$3.95 per month, I think it works out to about £25 for the year (I pay yearly because then you get one month free, so I only have to renew every 13 months rather than every 12 months.
Okay, so for about £40 you now own your own name and own some space on a server to put all your files.
Next you need content. There are LOADS of ways to make content but if you're new to building websites the best thing you can do is use a template. Parcom again sell these templates for newbies like yourself, they will install it and everything, it will look professional. I think Parcom's templates start around US$40 and go up from there...
You can then use an easy web-interface to put your own content and photos on the site, add things, delete things which aren't relevant etc.
If you were to go with Parcom, domain name registration, hosting for one year, plus a snazzy template installed, you should get it all for well under £100.
Please don't think I'm trying to push you towards Parcom tho, there are LOADS of hosting providers on the internet and all of them will offer you a similar service at a similar price.
Excellent advice so far, I have my own website and have done a few for other poeple too and have used www.oneandone.co.uk for my web hosting and design packages and done them myself.
For a start if you want a web presence but not the hassle of creating your own champdogs is good. One you've got your affix sorted and your own space you can create your won site and put a link from champdogs to your own domain name.
Costs also depend on how "interactive" you want your site to be. You'll find a lot of cheap hosting only allow the basics of basics.
At the end of the day it's entirely upto you, and what your budget is.
As and example my site www.adamo.me.uk, has a gallery on for our pics. For this it requires two technologies (PHP and MySQL) For this I pay 7.99 a month with Zen internet.
There are several CMS (content management systems) such as Joomla or Wordpress which allow you to not need any web design skills or technical knowledge for creation of a good site.
As a starter for ten... create all your pages in a word document how you would like them to appear. List what functinailty you require from the site (such as a contacts page or reserving pups online etc). Then you can decide in which direction you need to go interms of site design and technology.
Brand can also be important. So choosing a good domain name is a need... something that people will remember.

Hehehe you're getting ripped off, I pay 1/4 of that and I've got PHP & MySQL
Toni, it just goes to show how important it is to shop around until you get the right deal which has everything you need it to, don't just race into the first web provider you find, because they're all different and all offer varying levels of service and functionality.
