I think they do suffer with depression. When I had to have Beauty PTS last year, Katie was really down for a few weeks, not interested in playing or even going for walkies, she had never been without doggie company, so I got Suzie within days KAtoe was back to her usual happy waggy self

I definitely think they do. When I lived with my mum/dad/brother we had a lab/collie cross called Ben. He wasn't on his own much as my Mum didn't work etc. and was very much adored but when he was alone he would pull the fur out of his paws to the extent that they would bleed and become really sore. The Vet actually diagonsed him with some form of depression/anxiety and medicated him for it. We had him from 6 weeks and certainly hadn't attributed to any sort of anxiety due to lack of love/training/attention/exercise. The Vet said it was a type of self harm! This was 15 years ago or more and not having explored the issue of depression in dogs in any kind of depth or experienced it with any other dogs it is difficult to say 'Yes! that is definitely a depressed dog' but Ben certainly had a depth of sadness to him (not all the time by any stretch of the imagination) which I feel was almost incurable....In the same way that humans do.
