.....but not Yellow Flat-Coats or Curly Coateds????
I was looking through the photo galleries earlier and it struck me that most Yellow Labs seemed to have thicker fur then the Blacks and Choccies...and from what folks have said they seem to moult more. Is there a reason for this? When you look at FCR's or CCR's they look the same whether they are Black or Liver and you don't get Yellow, yet I presume somewhere a long way back they share a common ancestry.
So what makes the Yellows, well Yellow? Was something else added a long time ago, or was it pure fluke that Yellows appeared in Labs but not in FCR's and CCR's.
Come to that, do you ever get GR's that are anything other than Cream, Gold, Red. etc????
Never thought of that Jules! Could you imagine a yellow Flatcoat or black GR? Yet you are right that they are all related...............I suppose it has to be the way they have been bred
There are yellow fatcoats born occasionally, but they are not recognised in the breed standard. i think, and I am sure John will correct me, that the yellow was not encouraged because they are too similar to Goldens, and for the crossbreeding that could take place. Any way, if you google yellow flatcoated retrievers, you will find some images.

i'd never thought of that before..... very good point tho and do yellows really have a diff sort of coat (thicker/moult-ier) than other colours? i know GR moult loads too so maybe its the blonde gene?

Jules, you should be chez moi at the moment! BLue has a far thicker coat than any lab I have ever come across (apart from the rellies of her's I have come across) and she's moulting like crazy! Yellow only appears worse as the colour shows up more, I'm sure.
Ooo I googled Yellow FCR's.....At first glance they look just like GR's but when you actually look closely you can see they have very different shaped heads, ear carriage, eye shape, etc and no doubt they are a slightly different body shape too but this was hard to see in the photos....Interesting though.

Good point Sam....In humans, Brunettes generally have fewer head hairs than blondes and I think Red heads have the most (I wonder whos job it was to count them ). I suppose it is possible that this could be the case with Labs too.
Yellow only appears worse as the colour shows up more, I'm sure.
I know exactly what you mean there Nic.... Mojo has a lot of coat and moults bucket loads of fur all over the place, but when Oyster started her moult, there seemed to be fur everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE!!!
Oyster and Mojo moult about the same, but Oyster is far more noticable. However she doesn't have the density of coat that Mojo has, even though she is a Lab/GR cross, which made me think she would somehow be hairier. Tara has a Deerhound coat (which she is crossed with)....Very short fluffy undercoat and wiry long guard hairs. She does moult but not in the same way that Labs do...It doesn't seem to leap off her body and blow all over the house, but when you brush her you get loads and loads off her....weird.
Oh and Helen....What a lovely looking dog Duncan is....You can really see he is a FCR and not a GR. What a shame they are not allowed in the showring.
