i think that they would probably follow the same pattern, working during the cooler hours of the day, i know that when i used to do search and rescue training, the amount of time that the dogs could work for would be about a 1/4 of what they could do on a cool day and also more dogs would be used so that they could spend as little time in the heat as possible,
I go at 8.30 during the week,it would be earlier but I had a run in with a very aggressive man who tried to kick Ben once-so i avoid him ! Ben feels the heat terrible, and runs like mad trying to find bunnys(never caught one).If it was hot i think he would kill him self !Today as its sunday he will go to a nice cool wood.
We rarely walk Basil in the heat of tha day. If we do we pick a shady wood. We always take water with us (usually a litre bottle which he finishes )
We take lots of rests (which we have to almost force Basil to take).
When we get home we hose him under his armpits, down his jugular and also around the groin area and then feed him ice-cubes as a treat.
If we are out for a longish walk then we have a cut off piece of hose we take (abot 50cm so it does fold small) we attach this to taps en-route and hose him as we go to keep him cool if we're not walking near the sea.
We do a short walk at about 6.30am then another after 6pm. Echo runs about like a maniac so I couldn't walk her during the hottest times of the day. Our training class is outside at midday so some of us take a plant watering spray to cool them off but I am not sure it has much effect.
Me and Gracie have just come back from a long walk and even then it was way too hot! She really couldn't cope with the heat and was more than glad to jump in the river by the end of the walk. My dogs tend to get shorter walks in the summer but because we now live near a river they spend most of the time in it - which is better anyway for them as its good exercise and much more fun! My situation prevents me from taking them on walks very early or later in the evening, but they seem happy enough with the routine they have
I don't like it if it is really hot either so I work on the principle if it is too hot for me it is too hot for her. Being a mega lively black labbie she gets hotter a lot quicker than my yellow lab Archie used to get. We are lucky in that we have the choice of quite a few woodlands near us so it isn't too hard to find shady walks. Most of the summer I tend to end up walking her in the morning and then after tea. In the winter we revert back to afternoon walks instead!
Useful to know about cooling armpits - will do that in future!
Went to the Woods Sunday as it was hot,Ben found a very muddy smelly rive to lay in So while he was having his drink before getting in the car the rest off the bottle got poured over his rear end Think he quite liked that!
i am contemplating paying a fortune to bring basil over for a long holiday. But if it's so hot he cant do all the lovely walks i want to show him then it may be a crazy waste of money for him to stay indoors.
