Being part of the breed standard, single coat is a big fault. Unfortunately it's also quite common in working lines. Are you sure it's a single coat, or just a rather thin coat? You cant miss it at moulting time, one tends to come out before the other so you get fine, often almost twisted looking coat and harsh coat which looks almost like sowing needles.

Regards, John

I really don't know what coat she has, she is definitely not working lines as she is from the show kennel Steeleigh and her litter mate has been doing very well at championship level and also got 2nd in the puppy dog class at crufts 2007.

A single coat is genetic so I'd doubt with that breeding she has one. More likely just a bit thin. Check what she throws out at moulting and you will see the two coats easily. There is no mistaking it at that time.

Regards, John

Hally looks on the face of it not to have a double coat - but if you run your hands backwards across her side, you can clearly see the downy light undercoat - which is considerably lighter than her main coat - which can be seen in abundance in my house twice a year Confused Shocked - so clearly her hair isn't that thin Rolling Eyes

Like John, I would be very surprised if your dog had a single coat with the breeding Wink

I know others say you shouldn't, but I noticed a marked difference in Hally's coat when she stopped spending so much time outdoors - they were both still there - but much thinner Shocked

Sue, I have been told the opposite by other owners/breeders! They said that keeping my dogs indoors lead to a poor coat due to the central heating factor. I have also been told that river water makes their coat soft so you shouldn't let them go into the water very much...em... weren't they originally in water most of the time Confused

Thats what I meant Very Happy - When Hally moved to spending more time indoors, her coats thinned out considerably Sad

Strange on the water angle Confused Clover's coat is quite soft, but tends to harshen up when she goes swimming etc (which would make sense surely Confused )

Yep strange one about the water. I've had people say river water is fine but salt water isn't?? I let them swim in sea water and clean river water, which I prefer as the sand gets everywhere no matter how much you try to clean it out.

They love water so much how can you keep that away from them? The look of sheer delight and anticipation in their faces when the dummy is being thrown into water is more satisfying to me than any rosette.

One of my bitches has what looks like almost a single coat but there is undercoat there, just not much of it. However she has such a shiny smooth coat that non Labrador people think she has the better coat!
