The problem with Monty's condition is that I'd doubt if the mode of inheritance is really understood. Particularly as at the moment there is not even a definitive test for it. But yes, it could certainly get into the Lab Poodle crosses, and if it did, with the microscopically small gene pool at the moment you could imagine the damage it would do!

Saying that, but I woke up at around 2am this morning with a thought in my mind that I have actually heard something some time ago about this condition, I believe in a Flatcoat. I'll make a phone call tonight and see what I can find out.

Regards, John

We were sat outside a bar last night (the only place in UK where it wasn't raining, but even then just a break in the showers!) and this couple turned up with their 4 month old white doodle, Woody. Have to say he was gorgeous with the most fabulous temperament. Quite the head turner too, that many people stopped to ooh and aah over him, which he liked very much.

I'd have no problem with the dear old Doodle if there wasn't the strong possibility as Di and others suggest that when the fad wears off the rescues will see lots of them. Certainly hadn't appreciated all the health testing issues until reading other posts.

What suddenley struck me last night though was the similarity between the rather large hairy Italian gundogs (there were lots at Crufts this year) - Spinones (sp?). Think these are lovely dogs, with lots of character but maybe without the slightly twee quality of the doodles.

Finally, was amused to hear one lady say to this couple last night that she was thinking about a doodle and that she'd previously had a Bedlington Terrier - now there's one breed you could explain to me until I was a hundred and I just wouldn't get!

Yes John - That's exactly what I was getting at. We don't know the form of inheritance - and probably won't for a long time. But as you say the gene pool for "doodles" at present is tiny and theortetically this problem could have quite an impact on these dogs in the future.

Good to know your brain is still in gear even when you are sleeping John!!! Look forward to hearing from you re the flatcoat

regards
June

Well, I know it was in gear, but I obviously had a bit of a misfire. Sad I made the phone call today but it's not that person I heard about it from. I Know it will come to me eventually though, and when it does I'll let you know. Wink

Regards, John

I have thought for a while that Doodles look like Spinones. In fact I saw someone about a year ago with a dog that I thought was a Spinone but when I asked I was informed that it was a Labradoodle. He didn't seem very happy that I had called his dog by the wrong breed name

I'm sure it will come to you John - but hopefully at a more reasonable hour this time

Regards
June
