Just one thing, don't fuss him if he looks upset or scared, just act like thunder is as normal as breathing. If you try to comfort him when he is scared of anything, you are only confirming to him that there is something to be scared of....he may even think you are scared of it too.
None of mine take the slightest bit of notice of storms or fireworks, but I know how terrible it can be for a dog who is, as one of the dogs I grew up with used to have to take Valium during the fireworks season. We didn't know about the "no fuss" strategy then, so we all took it in turns to try to comfort her, which is probably the worse thing we could have done .
I used to look after a GR who was as bold as brass about everything - until it came to thunder - then he used to go a bit mad. Like everyone has said we just used to sit with him but let him know it was all fine and nothing to worry about.
I tried the thunder CDs with him. I sat through hours of ever increasing levels of rain storms on the CD player (following all instructions to the letter) with Sparkie, made not a bit of difference when it came to the real thing - he still went mad.
Pepsi and I got caught in a terrible thunder storm last year ... we were in the woods at the time and the rain wasn't getting through the tree but when we came out to the open a huge flash of lightning and clap of thunder sent pepsi back into the woods and I had to run in after her I wanted to go home but couldnt leave her there ... I was searching everywhere for her and its wasnt until I had to make my way back to the car I spotted her under my car she run round the outskirts of the woods back to the car .... wow the cuddle i had off her was wonderful but since then she hates thunder and get very stressed about it and will hide under our bed til its over wont come out for even a treat ... its a shame as never wanted her to be like that but it did catch us without warning and the clap was awful ..... I do try my best to get her out in them but she wont have any of it .....
Baxter is 14mths and stands in the garden when we have a storm catching the rain When it was bonfire night he waited at the door and sat watching So he's either deaf or likes loud bangs
