Hi we have a 9 week old Black Lab and we already have a large crate for home.

We would like to get a smaller crate to travel in the car,we have a large hatchback car but the house crate is a bit too big to fit.

Any suggestions on what to get for short to medium car tripswhile he is a young puppy.

I have a 36" crate in the car for CJ, he has a 48" in the house, he didn`t like the seat harness would twist himself up in it and I`d have to stop to free him Shocked Very Happy

not sure if i can get a 36" in the car as we have two children still in car seats as well, so cant put back seats down

As Bobby is still a puppy i thought of getting a smaller travel crate but will he outgrow it too quick ??

This is more for trips to the vets etc or when my wife has the kids and dog in the car, any ideas, not sure if i like the harness idea ?

We have the seatbelt etc and simply dont take kids when the dog needs the vet Laughing i find it too much stress and no room in car for all lol

The smaller crate to be honest is a waste of money as he will out grow in a blink of an eye, you have to make a plan like we do and who needs really to be in the car at a certain time.

You said you dont have room for crate and kids so you take dog and wife and kids stay at home ? vice versa

Will the dog need to be in the car at all times when wife and kids are?

Hi

There are quite a few different designs in crates and they range from the conventional metal ones to the newer style of canvas ones. Cars can also be fitted for crates too that come made to measure. I like the idea of the light-weight canvas ones even though I dont have one.......yet!!!!! You might find some different styles on ebay, so personally I would try there. Also argos do some also.

Wish you luck in your descision Very Happy

Well leaving the kids at home ( 6 and 8 ) isnt an option and besides we got the dog to be part of the family. So we need to think again with a solution, maybe just a dog guard and a small harness as we have anchor points in the load are of the hatch .

I used a seat belt harness for Izzy, she'd have out grown a smaller crate far too quickly, and couldn't fit in the cat basket at 9 weeks old. The good thing with the harness is that it can be adjusted to fit as they grow, I bought the Large breed one.....for Irish Setters etc, from Pets at Home, It took a few attempts for her to settle in the car with one, but she soon learnt, alternatively.....................change your car for an estate model Laughing and you'll have plenty of room, this is what we have had to do, with 2 dogs and 4 people all trying to squash into a normal family car Laughing

My car is like an estate , Vauxhall Signum, basically its a cross between a large hatchback and an estate, we could even put a dog guard in the back load area. This doesnt seem right while the dog is a small puppy so we need to think about this some more, maybe a harness is the way ?
