Picked up Maudie the most beautiful puppy in the world a couple of days ago, but she has got life totally backwards as far as house training goes! I take her outside at all the advised times and have been known to wait an hour or so but nothing happens until we go back inside and then she performs immediately! Even if I catch her and pick her up midstream she will then wait again holding on until we are back inside. I clear everything up without making a fuss but to no avail! On the odd occasion that she has gone outside - about three times I think I make a lot of fuss of her but it doesn't seem to work. When she goes indoors she looks up as if to say ' wasn't that clever' but I ignore her and don't give out any positive signs. What can I do - I use a spray to get rid of the smell everytime but she just seems to go as she pleases - no sign that she is about to go. Please hhelp - the lounge carpet is only a couple of years old but luckily is not a light colour!
Also she howls after being left for only 30 secs but I expect she will get better as she realises that she is not being abandoned. In fact she's howling as I speak! Goodness knows what the neighbours think i am doing to her!

There are far more experienced people on here to advise you who may come up with something really good.........but in the meantime.....how long do you stay outside with her to go? I had to sit outside with Darcy for up to half an hour at first before she would pee, but now she does it on command most often
As for the howling - that will stop, just ignore her
Love her name by the way, gorgeous

I usually stay out quite a while sometimes an hour although if its raining maybe only 20 mins. She's so very young I'm not expecting miracles but she seems to think I want her to go inside! Its also beginning to get a bit smelly indoors in spite of having a special spray - does anyone know of a good one? By the way where in Dorset are you? I'm in Bournemouth.

chester was amazingly easy to train.....but my friend got a lab pup and he seemed to do the same thing your pup is doing.... they were crate training him....not sure what you do? we used a crate for the first two to three weeks until he was good to go and we haven't had any problems... not sure really what to tell you take treats outside with you and when she pees even a little tell her how wonderful she is and give her a treat....just be patient she is bound to learn...every time she goes inside even if she is done take her out immediatley after.....make sure you use the same command every time she goes ( i just say go pee) but other people say different things...he does the same for (go poo) so anyway just some tips incase they help.... good luck! ~Crystal

It took a while for CJ to catch on Carolyn, perseverance is the way to go, may take a while but Maudie will get the message in the end. Sounds to me like you are doing all the right things, someone else may have some tips though

HI carlyone...
maudie's still a baby... with time i'm sure she'll learn to do her bizz outside... Most of us have gone thru this stage... I remember i used to even note down the timing to understand frodo's pattern and take him out at that time....
Good Luck

Sounds like you're doing everything right then, she'll catch on eventually. Darcy is very good now at 12 weeks and has worked out how to use the dog door (still squeezes through the cat flap sometimes too although she won't be able to do that much longer!) and goes out by herself to pee most of the time but still forgets occasionally and has the odd puddle. Lucky for me I have laminate floors so haven't had to worry about my carpets getting spoilt (although the mat by the back door has been through the washer a few times now )
I bought a clicker that has treats inside from Wilkinsons. I put small bite mixer in it (gets stuck sometimes but works most of the time) and I keep it near the garden so that when she goes I can reward her - at first I did this everytime but now only occasionally (it's a good distraction when I find her eating her poo though )
I'm in Poole by the way

Believe it or not , not only have I the most beautiful pup in the world she is also the cleverest! After me wondering if she'll get the message today she cottoned on and has only had two pees inside which were really my fault as I knew she probably needed to go but thought my need was greater and went to the loo first incase it was another marathon session outside! Hopefully it has not been a fluky day cos I just said 'Hurry Maudie' and every one a winner!!
I watch her every second she's out and spend most of the time digging in her mouth for assorted leaves and stones, but turned round to pull up a weed only to hear a splash and she'd fallen in the pond! She could just about get out on her own but I gave her a helping hand and instead of looking frightened she thought she had had a great time! May have to get a cover for it now! Thanks to all for your replies.

Labs are naturals in water (most of them anyway!), but will be a good idea to keep a close eye on her til she`s a bit bigger, won`t be able to keep her out of it then!.
Hope she keeps up her not peeing in the house seeing as you`ve only had her a few days, she and you are doing very well I think

In response to your potty training endeavors...try attaching bells or some other object that makes a lot of noise (within your dog's reach) on whatever door your dog is to go outside to go to the bathroom. Teach the dog to move the bells/object with its nose every time it needs to go out. Whenever the dog is successful, give praise, favorite treat, etc. If you have more questions, let "sugarandmocha" know! sugarandmocha
