Been to a show today (I know I said I wasn't but this one was paid for and it was close to home and a nice day out!!)

Firstly, to everyone's complete and utter astonishment the judge would not allow any baiting.

He measured every dog!

He insisted on everyone holding the lead taut not loose as we do normally.

He counted teeth!

He said some lovely things about Bluebird, excellent head and eye, good top line, excellent movement, excellent coat, excellent bone THEN, you guessed it, gave us the thumbs down - INSUFFICIENT! All down to teeth.

It's a mad crazy world over here!

So results so far: (No placings as she is still too young)
Puppy class:
Promising
Very Promising
Promising

Junior class:
Excellent (English judge - I LOVE ENGLISH JUDGES!!)
Insufficent (Horrible, horrible judge)
Very Good (at the French National Championship show)
Insufficient! (nice judge , horrible result!!)

Still, it was a ncie day, I met up with lots of friends and saw lots of lovely dogs!

Sorry to hear you didn't have the result you were hoping for.

Unfortunately, there are some judges that will judge the faults not the dog, if that makes sense.

I don't show dogs, but we do show birds (don't laugh!) and it is very similar - some judges will just look for faults and mark a bird down for a fault, whereas others will judge the bird for what it is overall and consider any faults.

Hope the next show is better for you.

Vicki

I'm glad to hear this judge was nicer than the last one!
What is actually wrong with her teeth? (I'm sure you've said before, but I can't remember!)

PS - and in the bird world, this often results in a really mediocre bird winning just because it is "faultless" as such but is not a good example of the breed, whereas a fantastic bird will not get placed just because its last tail feather is yet to grow fully.

She has 4 premolars missing (one on each jaw left, right, top and bottom). Quite common, so I have been led to believe but not good in France. In the UK the judges look at the bite (she has a perfect bite), they do not count teeth (not in labradors anyway). In France they do! LOL!

Anywaaaaay, just spotted another show in August with a UK judge....mmmm, very interesting. Laughing Laughing

Yes, Nicola you are right, I am sure Tottie has same teeth missing, but all judge does here is check her bite. It seems so unfair when so many good 'English labs' (for want of a better phrase!) do very well here without those 'required' teeth on the French form of judging.

Anybody know what they look for in other European countries, Spain, Portugal, Italy and what about the grand 'ole US of A?????

Northern Europe it's an issue - Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Scandanavia (I think!). The USA are sticklers for teeth too though some judges do and some don't!

Ohhhhhhhhhh yes believe me they tooth count in the States - and you can, like in mainland europe be dismissed for having insufficent dentition OR if measurered for being over or under the specified heights that WE take as a guide and THEY take as set in stone.

yet generally speaking US labradors carry a LOT more weight than UK dogs, even a heavy UK dog would look light in a Champions class in the States.

Di, Blue stands at a very nice 54cm - minimum height for a bitch under the French breed standard (which is 54 to 56cm).

Who's the Mrs Stevens judging at Pitou-Charente at the SW France regional retriever club show on 24 August then? Any ideas?
