We have trained our 4 month year old puppy to toilet on some newspaper in the hallway, and she is very good at doing this!
She now has all of her vaccinations and we can let her out in th garden to do her toilet.

When she is out in the garden with us she does go toilet out there. But when we are inside she still goes on the newpaper(like we taught her to).

How do we get her to go to the door and toilet outside everytime? Do we have to catch her everytime she's about to go and put her outside?

Is this the only way?

i never used newspaper in the house as in my mind it makes sense to never allow a pup to toilet in the house...

but your method is fine... i think you now need to slowly move the newspaper towards the back door and eventually move outside completely - its good at this time of year as u can leave the back door open during the day when you're in so she can go out by herself.

i'm sure someone who has used the paper method will be along to correct me if i'm wrong!

Won`t be easy traing her off paper but not impossible, take her outside after she wakes from a nap, after she`s had a play/training session in the house and about 15 mins or so agter she`s had a meal.

Also watch out for signs she may exhibit that she needs to go, thses can be sniffing around, circling or pacing up and down, there may be other signs that she chooses for herslef, will just be a case of keeping an eye on her and grabbing and taking outside if you think she needs to go.

She will soon learn to tell you when she wants to go in her own way Smile

Each time you put paper down make the area smaller until it's not worth it. I didn't have this problem with Toby, he is now 6 months, had him at 11 weeks and only put paper down for 3 nights before he was clean. It took a lot longer with are last dog but the above advice worked.

May I ask why you haven't let your pup use the garden! It's a lot easier! Although I knew the history of animals in my garden for the last 13 years, but we always let Toby out with other dogs in the garden that we knew were fully vaccinated.

the method Mary has decribed is what we used with coal... lots and lots of praise when the pup goes outside along with a key word like wee wee's or be quick etc which i've found so useful! when we are round friends/family/on a journey i can use the words and Coal knows its toilet time! Very Happy

Agree with Sam, although I now don't believe in using paper/pads for the same reason Sam mentioned, when Kyra was little I was none the wiser and used pads. I do believe though this delayed housetraining with Kyra, she still learnt by the time she was 4/5 months but it seemed like forever! I did move the pads closer to the door, then outside and then took them away completely, just like Sam suggested.

I have my second puppy now and I haven't used any pads or paper, just taking her out every time she wakes, after meals and after playing and after 5 days she has already got it! I am sure I will have some accidents along the way as it is early doors yet but so far so good...

Carry on with whatever works for you and your pup. xxxx

Key words, like Sam mentioned, are really important as sometimes you need them to know exactly when to go!

Lots of praise, lots of trips outside and lots of eyes in the back of your head! Wink Smile

Oh dear..using paper trains pups to 'go' inside.. If a garden is a private, not shared garden, pups can go into it before vaccinations...

Never mind.. no harm done.. but toilet training will take a little bit longer and some patience Wink

Go back to the very beginning as if you were bringing her home for the 1st time...taking pup out every half hour or so.. I would remove all papers immediately and keep taking her outside... giving masses and masses of praise when she 'empties' herself... little accidents in the house should be cleaned up with no comment or fuss...

It will take a little longer as she has learned that going indoors is acceptable.. have patience.. Wink

Some people are asking why I haven't taken my pup outside in the back garden before she was vaccinated. This is because we have just moved in and the man who lived there before us had a dog. I did not want het to catch anything before the vaccinations.

Thanks for everyones help though! Smile

completely understandable.. its amazing how much we take for granted, and expect others to be in 'our' situations.. where life is so much easier lol....

good luck with puppy, Very Happy
