I am a great believer in supplements.. All three have two Cosequin Tablets a day, fish oil and one of them has a special powder to help with his digestion. Every morning they have healthy bacteria yoghurt.

I also think fresh meat is important to help them along. Everyother day they get cooked veggies with their dinners and each night a frozen bone to help their teeth/gums.......

Thank you for your comments. Very Happy
I might give the fish oils a try. Next time I'm at the vets I'll ask about supplements for joints.

Izmo:
Both dogs are fed a mix of Pedigree tin food (what used to be called Chum) and Hills Large Breed dry food. (The Hills I get from the local Feed Store, it's a lot cheaper than the vets).
They also get various doggy treats.

Very Happy

Ben has had Seraquin tablets since he was diagnosed with Arthritis so that he's getting Glucosamine and Chrondroitin. Ben has had problems with itchy skin on his belly and the vet thinks it's an allergy to either grass or woollen carpets. As he's recently been joined at home by a rescue Lurcher who was in very poor health when found and is now moulting for England, I decided to try them both on Evening Primrose Oil as I'd read that was good for coat / skin. When Ben's skin is bad it's a real worry for me and I also figure that right now Dory needs all the help she can get in recovering her health. Only had them on the evening primrose oil for a week, so I'll see how it goes. They're on it in liquid form at present, but I also got some in tablet form. No idea which might be the best.

I used green lipped muscle on my old dog and it helped. But I am a big user of Aloe Vera juice for all the animals if they are a bit stiff /arthritic.
Up til now it has helped enormously. I buy it on the net from Holland and Barrett.

My Beauceron Male use to suffer from Skin issues, and he would also eat his paw raw. We found out that one of the main causes was the Purina kibble we gave him. Now he has raw meat, and the problem has gone away (touch wood).

I am afraid that pretty much all dog health supplements are just scams and you are far better off saving your money.

Glucosamine is a case in point - there were some really poor early trials with very few participants that showed benefits to joint condition.

But when these were later followed up by mass trials with thousands of participants it was found to be as effective as sugar pills at improving joint condition.

Edit - Oh and guess which trials the sellers of Glucosamine mention and which they avoid...

http://nccam.nih.gov/research/results/gait/

The more sinister thing is that it may have some effect as a painkiller which would explain why some people see improvement in their dogs.

However using painkillers to enable exercise on a damaged joint doesnt sound a very good idea to me...

This is good advice - our last dog had terrible allergies and after spending thousands on diagnoses and inumerable courses of steroids and Anti-inflammatories we eventually put her on a simple diet of fish n brown rice and it cleared up (takes up to two months to get good results on an exclusion diet so do not despair in early weeks).

Lottie has Glycoflex 2 every day and I feel it does her some good or I wouldn't waste my money.

I started her on it,funnily enough, after my Mum had good results on the human version. Her knees (and mine!) have always cracked when bending. 6 months after she started taking the glucosamine, the cracking has stopped. I don't think that's a coincidence nor do I think supplements are a scam.
Each to there own opinion.

That's quite a sweeping statement isn't it.

Lots of people have used them with their animals with a very different experience.

Well my 2 are on joint aid as recommended on here and by my vet, Maj is for preventative and for Pip it is too ease her chronic arrthritis in her wrists.

Samlab sometimes I think we have to be open to experiences that people have with various treatments and not just really rely on scientific fact Wink
