I also thought that we didnt have a decent recall, stay etc but that seems to have been missing for the past 2 sundays
LJ - I assume you meant, I thought we DID have a decent recall etc.
And to be honest so did I until we started the classes, I have found with Danny that in any new environment he takes the **** and everything goes out of the window because he gets too excited, and now I am trying to work on this...
Or did you mean, that you DIDNT but now you do? If so, Well Done!!!
Hi all, interesting how people teach the recal isnt it! How true it is that each dog is different and methods of training to suit that dog.
I really enjoy teaching the recal because it is so rewarding.
I think it is one of the most important commands to teach and it should be conditioned into the dog from day one.
When I was teaching it I made it the most rewarding thing for my rottie pup ie, food. cheese and cooked liver in small doses. I made sure that every time the dog returned to me after its name and then a "come here" it was rewarded. EVERY TIME! Sometimes I would do 2-3 recalls on a walk then others I would do little ones in short bursts. Varying the times. Keeping her on the ball. Also do it in every situation and enviroment as some dogs do not understand commands if its an alien enviroment. Like on the lead or if you were to hide and call out or if you were in a different room at home to that of the dog.
Does anyone starve their dogs here? Its what I did once a week when my rottie was out of puphood. Its good for the system and it is a natural thing for dogs. After a starve day The recall training would really sink in that the idea of me being being a meal ticket.
Another good training tool I found was the spray commander for distracting the dog momentarily from what ever she was zoneing into. Not a thing I used all the time, just when I thought training was slipping.
Another thing to remember is that dogs have drives. Like the prey drive so it would be unfair to even think about recall training during a chase, or pups/dogs playing hard, a dog on heat or in some cases at the training hall as some dogs do not cope well with that sort of training system. you would be wasting your breath and poss ruining your chances of the dog respecting that command if you were to repeat it over and over whilst he was of in chase of a rabbit also.
Instead of waiting for the dog to give chase, recall before he moves and keep him on heel. Hard I know and a beady eye is needed to look out for situations.
Im just firing thoughts here not talking to a particular person, I hope my knowledge helps a bit. It takes ages to get a good recall and its hard work at times as pups go through lapses through their training but dont give up and always expect and aim for one command only and time it so you know the dog has heard you.
There are 3 reasons why a dog doesnt answere to a command. 1) he hasnt heard you (unlikely though in most cases) 2) he doesnt understand that command properly and 3) he is giving you the finger ie, your pack racking isnt high in his veiw. or of course he is afraid of you you might thump him (bad training mistakes from owners)
NILIF every one should be doing if they have a "sod you, Im off" dog ie number 3.
i'm sure i've read somewhere that one of the biggest secrets you must keep from your dog is that he's faster than you are! so never ever let on that if he runs, you haven't got a chance in hell of catching him! so therefore never give chase as you'll be letting the secret out!
i agree with making yourself the biggest idiot in the park/field and preteniding to find something really interesting!
Becs - i'd love to see your bee impression!
