Sam

We are not talking chokes chains here ( well I'm not anyway ).....

Correctly fitted it is the same as a standard flat collar....ie...same fabric / material, same effect...and makes no difference....if someone is going to yank, they will anyway, but with these no yanking necessary.....the noise negates the need

We use a half check for obedience training, I find a slip lead is best for heel work.

Its really important when using a full check that its on the right way up so it loosens.

Yes i did go and get a half check/quarter check or whatever the term is - part material with a little bit of chain.

altho i don't use it much, OH's mum has been for when she's out which was the main reason for getting one. He does walk better on it and i will try using it too.

Smile

Hi Sam,

I've got flat collars, 1/2 checks, haltis and a canny collar! The only thing I won't use is a full check, purely because if the dog does pull into it suddenly (eg sees a squirrel!) he can damage his windpipe as there is nothing to stop it tightening beyond the actual diameter of his soft squishy neck!! Shocked

I like the 1/2 check because it hangs nice and loose whilst the lead is slack, or when the dog is off lead, and it tightens up when the dog pulls, making a clinky noise. I have never had the 1/2 check so tight that it pinches in any way, just so that when the chain is used up, it is a close fitting flat collar that won't come over the dogs ears should he try to pull back.

I agree with the others in that any collar can be used to abuse the dog by yanking him around and also any collar can be used sensitively in experienced hands. I do think though that the full check is the only one with the potential to do real damage to the windpipe if the dog suddenly lunges away.

As Jules so rightly says, and I know you know this, there is no substitute for training! Mine are little angels when we're at the club doing heelwork, but still pull like ten tonnes of charging rhino when theres other dogs around.

So anyway, I'd back your decision to get the 1/2 check, hope you find it useful.

Helen x
