first off with regards to the use of either full or half... OH's mum certainly knows what she's doing with them and uses them correctly and is helping me.
i really don't like the use of them in general but it seems to be helping Coal lots when he's out with other dogs.
think after the comments above i'll see about getting him a half check... again i think its the noise that probably helps bring him back in line and get his attention... and OH's mum has it working brilliantly
(rather jealous actually as he walks alot better for her than with me! had to hand him over the other day whilst we were out as he was dragging me all over the place within a minute he was trotting next to her )
Sorry to laugh Tigersam but at times they are so like kids and behave better for other people I think they soon pick up on what they can get away with and push it to the limit at time
I know I will upset some, but I am a great believer in check chains. My 3 all have full check chains. I have always used them. As said earlier they should be placed high behind the ears, and only used to give the dog a quick sharp check, if done correctly this doesn`t strangle the dog and only gives a little nip on the neck, the chain then relaxes and the dog walks nicely. All the time the dog is walking to heel correctly the chain hangs loose around the dogs neck.
When off lead, the check chains are always taken off.
I personally find with mine, that when walked on a normal flat collar they actually pull more. I see loads of people whilst out walking with ordinary collars whose dogs seem to be choking, because they pull so much, so for me it will always be a properly sized, and fitted check chain.

I agree....In the right hands of an experienced handler they are a great training aid.
However, most people don't know how to use them and so you see dogs strangling themselves as they go along....This is probably how they got renamed *Choke* chains, rather than Check chains.
Hi Sam After a Professional Lady came to see me about Clyde she got me to try him on a 1/2 check collar and a very short Road Lead to get him walking to heel better and iv never looked back its been the best thing i have to walk him to heel when wee change back over to a normal collar and lead or even rope lead he starts to pull again so i would reccomend 1/2 check and short lead as hes no where to go except be beside me

I use a 3/4 check on mine........used and positioned correctly they are the same as a flat collar...ie should they pull, the noise does the job...the collar itself just closes, fabric to fabric and no part of the chain touches them, so ends up as a flat collar...... nice and loose when they don't pull....
Any search on this subject will show I have every harness / head collar / lead going..... trying to take the steam out of my freight trains....
Ideally an exceptional heel is the answer am still striving for that.......
Well the 3/4 should be fitted so when the collar / lead is taugt nothing other than the fabric touches the pup... the 1/4 chain bit is ' an extension ' to the lead ..if that makes any sense...
