Posted: Sun Apr 22, 2007 10:43 pm Post subject: Advice on food for a very itchy and balding Jack.
My boy Jack is on a restricted diet at the moment. He is, so far, allergic to storage mites, house dust mites, and various grasses. He started with his allergies about May of last year. He was on James Wellbeloved Chicken and latterly on the fish.
After being referred to a dermatologist Jack was put on Purina HA which, and I quote direct from their site, 'Is a highly digestible diet containing a single hydrolyzed protein source and a low allergen carbohydrate source. This unique formula is also a vegetarian diet.' This food is only available on prescription and the biggest size they do is a 13kg bag at a cost of £60!!!!
The list of ingredients are
Corn starch, modified isolated soy protein, coconut oil, dicalcium phosphate, canola oil preserved with TBHQ, powdered cellulose, corn oil preserved with TBHQ, potassium chloride, vegetable gums (gum arabic and guar gum), choline chloride, DL-Methionine, salt, magnesium oxide, lecithin, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium carbonate, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, garlic oil, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite[/color].
It is very boring and looks completely uninteresting. It's no wonder he sometimes gives me a look when I put his bowl down.
His dermatologist, one of the best around, does not agree with allergy testing for food. However, our vet will do it but can't at the mo as Jack is on steroids!! It's a vicious circle.
I did a trial run on the new Burns food Pork and Potato but he became itchy. Can't be 100% sure if the food was to blame or if it was enviromental.
His is a long way from being sorted and I'm just looking to see if anyone has had similar experiences and are further along with the process than us.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, in advance.

Oh I know Carroll here had terrible problems with her Choccie girl. I think in the end, apart from everything else, they discovered she was allergic to the processing that most dried foods go through.
I know she did switch her to BARF for a while and that really helped but I have a feeling she did switch her back to dried food. Hopefully she'll see this thread soon and tell you what she is feeding her Majic on.
Archie is allergic to dustmites, storage mites, beef, pork and lamb.We found this out 6 weeks ago,i am using Burns chicken and brown rice and fish and brown rice.
have just come across this topic. I have a pony who has rubbed himself raw this year. First of all thought it was Lice, but no not a sign. He was very itchy, never seen him like it. Called out the vet and he has prescribed predinsolone (I think that is how it is spelt) tablets daily. I have just spoken to my vet to reorder the prescription as my pony stopped itching within 2 days and his hair has grown back very fast. He said that they have several dogs and cats on this, it is for allergies. They do contain cortazone. Would it be worth having a word with your vet about this and see what he/she thinks.
I have got to halve the dosage now, and keep him on them for 3 months. Then we are going to see how he is without them.
Majic is an allergy queen too she is allergic to chicken and environmental allergies and lots of processes dried food goes through, so we switched to raw feeding which was fab for her until she became ill and we found that her bowel was not normal and could not digest the bone properly so I spent all day on here searching for foods and this is the one we have landed with and it suits her down to the ground
I found a lot of food although stating loamb and veg etc..... still had chicken oil in them which did her no good what so ever.
She would still be on raw as natural chicken does not effect her but with her bowel problem (she is a walking money spinner for the vets ) that is not a route we can continue with
Im not so keen on keep giving Clyde steriods as it will eventually not work for him well thats what i was told please tell me if im wrong however i have just the other day found this site www.caninenaturalcures.co.uk the tablet is called Ditch the Itch iv just orderd some and Clyde has had his 1st 1 this morning so will let you know how he gets on

Thanks for everyone's help and advice.
We are going back to see the dermatologist on Friday. He has suggested we do a food trial. Keep him on his Purina but one week add chicken, next week lamb, next week turkey and so on. I'll discuss it with him when I see him. We are also going to discuss the possibility of putting him onto Atopica as I don't want him on steroids for any length of time (although they do stop him itching).
He also has mobility problems. He was xrayed on Monday and there is a possibility he has OCD and cruciate ligament problems. His films have been passed onto an orthopaedic vet in Stirling so hopefully we'll hear from him soon as to what we need to do.
It's enough to have one major problem to deal with but my poor boy has two. He his such a lovely boy and the vet commented today on what a happy and fun boy he is. I just want to do the best I can for my boy and get him sorted.
I keep you posted as to how we get on as I know I'm not the only one in this predicament.
Take care.

Çoco is horribly itchy. She had a couple of hotspots and while she was on prednislone (sp?) she did not itch at all and was a totally different dog. She is far worse in spring and summer and when it is warm, poor mite.
Marie, I would be really interested to see how you get on with the natural thing. Cocos on Burns and is less itchy than she was on other brands but this spring it's júst terrible and for the first time she is losing her fur and is scabby all around her neck (both that's not where she scratches! )
