Well the last show went so well, great results, this week ciould not have been more different.
We went into the ring, good so far, did a quick circle all the dogs together. The judge examined the dog in front of me, gave it a good old going over. Got to us, opened her mouth, shouted out IN FRONT OF EVERYONE "INSUFFICIENT, FIVE TEETH MISSING" and chucked us out of the ring. I have never been more embarrassed and upset in my entire life. Nothing, no comments, he basically implied my beautiful Bluebird was useless, a terrible example of the breed and not worthy of being in his ring. Not even the curtesy of looking over her at all just shouting out and holding his hand up, displaying clearly the number five and showing the entire ring and those around,
I am truly demoralized. I can't tell you how depressed I am. It's the last show I am ever going to. I paid good money to enter (and it's not cheap to enter one dog in one class), I expect at least the curtesy and good manners and a judge to indicate to me politely what he felt were failures but also her good points too (she MUST have some, mustn't she?)
I had the chance afterwards to speak to a fellow competitor who agreed it was uncalled for. She said it was a crying shame that such a lovely looking dog should have the misfortune of being bred and shown in France. She as lovely and gave me a massive hug and kisses (as the french do) and invited me to have lunch with her. Sadly I was so upset I didn't but now I wish I had. This is her website and a picture of her http://showmetheway.lab.free.fr/index.html
boo hiss - I dont care what Ruby looks like (know she is a 'crap example' of the breed in show eyes but appreciate that in the show world it must be devestating
There is indeed no need for that kind of rudeness at all I really feel for you how horrible
OMG Nicola - that is appalling - personally I would complain to the club secretary, the least he could do is give you the courtesy of going over your girl - you paid your money.
It is his loss, Blue is beautiful, pleae don't give up because of one idiot like him
Oh Nicola.. sweetheart.. dont give up.. there are many more like him out there.. but guess what.. there are much more who are totally the opposite.. please dont give up.. your girl is a real cracker.. and she deserves the chance.. and so do YOU.. dont allow this type of judge to ruin all your hopes and dreams.. we all come across them at some time or other.. grit your teeth.. get back in the saddle and show them what you and Blue are made of...
Thats awful Nicola, how bl**dy rude!!, was he English?, desn`t matter either way there waas no need to make you feel small in front of all the people there.
I`d complain to who ever it is there and see what can be done about it.
The lady who spoke to you later looks lovely, nice of her to have a chat with you.
Thanks everyone. I still feel bl00dy awful. (Sorry for the bad language mods).
Sue you and I know she is beautiful - it's only ignorant French judges who aren't breed specialists who don't know otherwise. It was a truly shocking experience and one I don't want to repeat anytime soon.
Stupid man was also judging a dozen other breeds too - from Rottie, to Newfies to Italian greyhounds! What the hell did he know? Thankfully there are at least a dozen truly nice French people to every one like him. Yes, he was well and truly French!! Sadly no point in complaining as it would only look like poor sportsmanship.
Kay at the moment it's really hard to see past this. My only hope is that she can be confirmed so I can breed with her and have my own pup to show in the future. Roll on the next 14 months or so and pray for good hips/elbows and eyes!
Sam, in the UK it's not a problem (that's how we got an "excellent" last week from a truly respected UK judge). In France they actually COUNT the teeth as well as check the bite even though the number of teeth is never actually stated in the breed standard.
No I'm not French (maybe that's my problem too? ) but as I said before I have so many truly lovely French friends (one of whom went with me and her and her lovely family and children helped me through this truly appalling day - we had planned long term to go to shows in France together - we both adore dogs - but she had some devastating news about her Landseer pup - her hubby's dog - and now she is starting afresh with a Basset Hound). I can't justify his behaviour as a result of him being French!!
