OK, this has happened a couple of times now, but this afternoon has really upset me... whilst training the 'sit - stay' Danny turns into a complete horror... he will not sit and stay but proceeds to jump up and me, bounce around and bark at me, completely ignoring my attempts to calm him down, he launches himself at me if I make any attempts to correct him or take him back to the spot I asked him to sit on...

What can I do? Anyone got any ideas?

This happened at gundog training last week and our trainer was quite frustrated... it has happened again this afternoon and we have a test in 3 weeks!! Shocked

Henry does this and it gets worse when he's been sitting still for a while. Sometimes it's because he needs a pee/poo/leg sretch so we just break off for a couple of minutes, walk him round and the he's usually OK.

Sorry Sonja, but I know its not that he needs to walk round or break or anything - he does it as soon as we start training the sit-stay....

for example, today we walked to the field where we train (10mins), danny was offlead for some of that time, so he'd done his business and had a run etc. Rolling Eyes

Do you think he really understands what you're asking him to do??? I mean has he been fine before and now he isn't... Only if Mojo doesn't understand what I want her to do she gets like this...like the brain goes into overdrive and she can't control herself. Confused

If he has been fine before then I'd take a big step backwards. Work on things he can do and does do willingly....Make sure he gets a nice reward for complying, then gradually reintroduce the stay...Just making it very short to start off with, then building up the time as the days go on.

Could it be that something happened while Staying that has put the bejeebers up him, as I know someone stood on Mojo's tail when she was in a down stay once and her rock solid stay went to pot straight after that...We had to go right back to square one. Rolling Eyes

Oh Rachel, I read your posts, and your Danny sound just like my Harley sometimes. Harley will do his sits and stays in the comfort of our own home perfectly but his problem is when he's distracted by other dogs (eg when at training) he will jump up, bounce around and bark at me and ignore any of my attempts to calm him down. We stopped going to training just for this reason but now Harley isn't getting the socialisation which is unfortunate.

Sorry I can't offer any advice!

I will watch this thread with interest to see what others have to say.

well sweetie this is what happens when you have an uncontrolable dog......... Laughing Wink Wink Laughing Laughing

It's not very good that the trainer was getting frustrated was it....

I don't know really what to advise but I would probably just leave the sit and stay for a couple of days....plus I guess you might be tense to see if he can do it and then he picks up on that.

Do you clicker train him? I think you said you whistle train?? I might be wrong.

lots of love
Kay

I kept repeating it until she finally got the message that fooling around = no mum time and she soon behaved Very Happy

Ive tried this command and get the same thing, i think its info overload !

Saying to a dog sit is good but when 2 words come on ie sit/stay they freak, well rosie does her litle face goes wonky as if to saty which are you telling me lol

Ive nearly got the sit but i now walk away only using a hand command untill i reach my final destination and then shout stay..
She seems to get this more as it isnt said all at once so can follow the command from each im asking her.

Im sure someone will correct me if im doing this wrong but for me its like teaching a child speech therapy and the words dont get heard but the symbols and slow rate of addding make the understanding !

hope you find a way as i know how frustrating it can get xx

Rach - I am having exactly the same problem with Jansen at the moment.

He was getting good at his sit stays & down stays & now its like we are back to square one.

On wednesday night at training he was so naughty I had to put him in the car to calm down & he still acted like a plonker when i got him back out.

What really frustrates me at training is when the trainer will see im struggling & take him to show me what to do ( i know what to do) and he does it perfectly & the trainer is like see he should be doing it, he does it for me, but thats not really any help because will do it for the trainer as its exciting to go see a new person.

I really is frustrating, i think I am going to have to go back to puppy stays with the lead & start again. Shocked

Ruby used to do this and add insult to injury by mouthing my arm too Shocked Embarassed She was 7 months old at the time. I used to take her back to basics every time and like carroll sid remove myself and ignore her. She did it a few times in training class and I just walked her out to the kitchen area (as out trainer advised) and ignored her for a few mins
