I was thinking about what I spend on dog related things each month and broke it down into the following based on 2 dogs. (3yrs old)

Insurance: £29
Food: £40-50 (£35 for 30kgs and then extra for meat and biscuits)
Misc: (chews treats): £5-10

So I make out I spend about £80 - £100 per month. Avg: £40 - £50 a dog. I dont scrimp on their treats and things but I don't go overboard. (my husband thinks I do) I spend a lot less now thanks to ordering Autarky.

Does this seem a realistic amount for each dog? Or too much? If anyone is happy to share, what do you spend?

Amanda

I spend approx the following per month:

Insurance (Direct Line): £13.28 for full continous cover
Food (Autarky): £19 15kg bag including p&p as order online
Miscellaneous - toys, treats, etc: £10

There's one-offs now and then such as extendable lead, etc but not every month (thankfully Laughing )

So that's £42.28 for me, so yes Amanda, what you spend seems ok to me!

Edited to add:
Can I add my vet bill for today?!! Knew it was too good to be true!

Also forgot the wormer which costs £9.99 for a bottle which lasts longer than a year, and flea treatment £6.99 I think it was. Quite cheap as I use holistic products.

Oh dear, more and more expenses creeping in Laughing

For two dogs
€52 on 15 kilo food (Hills) - how much do you feed your guys? A 15 kilo sack lasts me a month for 2 dogs) but I don't feed recommended amount as it's far too much and they'd both end up as huge bloaters!
€10 on wheetabix (v expensive here) for breakfast
€5 dogs milk (to go with wheetabix)
€20 on fresh meat (weekend treat)
Toys and other stuff as and when
No insurance - don't have dog medical cover here but vets bills very low and third party already inc in house contents cover

€87 about £60 I suppose, for two. I suppose it's comparable if I added on pet insurance like you guys pay.

Hi Nicola

The 30kgs does last me over a month but I would have to buy within the next month anyway so I just count it in my budget,(I suppose there will eventually be a month when I can skip buying as it would have added up)

I dont give them other breakfasts or anything like your dogs get. I use weetabix as a Kong filling sometimes in milk, frozen.

At least with the posts I can see I am not over board!

I think the 15kg bag of food will last me over a month, it's the first bag I've bought that size so not sure exactly how long it will last, but put it in as a per month expense anyway.

I would hope a 15 kilo bag would last over a month for one dog (unless he's very greedy or got a very generous Mum!) Laughing

I could use the weetabix to go in a Kong but they take the Kongs outside and I kept getting them trapped in the blades of the tractor mower and I got fed up with having to take the mower apart! Laughing Kongs are banned!

I guess I would give them more (Kibble) if I split their food into two rather than the weetabix. MOH just likes to give them something breakfasty at breakfast time (old habits die hard - there's no way they are getting croissants and pain au chocolate!) The meat is instead of kibble at the weekends. Adds variety and at €2 a kilo is cheaper.

A timely question - we actually sat down at the weekend to do Milo budgetting and so we put something aside each month for monthly and annual costs ....came up with the following ;

Petplan Insurance £25.00 (monthly)
Food & Treats £30.00 (monthly)
Miscellaneous £20.00 (monthly)
Vet
Flea £100.00 / £8.33 (monthly)
Worming £60.00 / £5.00 (monthly)
Consultations £100.00 / £8.33 (monthly)

Total Monthly £96.67

Believe it or not we use ouf full allocation of miscellaneous every month just replacing collars and leads she merrily chews her way through ! Hopefully this will start curbing somewhat as she gets older !

Its definitely not a cheap pastime but no amount of money would ever make me regret or begrudge my little bundle of happiness !
