Right here is the issue.......
We have been working on the heel work with coal and he does this well when i have treats etc. most lead walks round the village we do some close heel work (where he walks stuck to my leg due to treat in my hand) and we also do general lead work where if he starts to pull, i walk backwards and then start off again when he is back level with me. this is fine and he 'gets it' most days BUT............
how can i get him to do this constantly. Its like every day we are starting from the begininng again. He will sit at the door, i go thru, he sits outside whilst i shut door and then whoosssh we are off down the step and we're halfway down the drive before i manage to get my foot and stop him!
then i spend the next 5-10 minutes walking backwards most of the time. he only does a proper heel once he's calmed down otherwise he is just not interested in food.
HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP
what am i doing wrong and/or what can i do to improve things?
he has a canny collar but he spends most of the time pawing at his nose and snow plowing the mud!

I wish I had advice to help you, but me and Ozzy are going through exactly the same thing When there's other dogs around I cannot control him at all. I look forward to any responses you get
Sam - your not doing anything wrong, we have this every time we go out & its just perseverance & even though it is really tough you just havr to keep it up, ts a contsant battle of the wills for me & jansen.
what we do that works if we see another dog I will tell jansen to sit & then he will watch the dog & il tell him leave, when the dog has walked past & is a few good metres away il tell him a good boy & we will set off again HTH
thanks Laurajane. he's actually not too bad with the other dogs and people. he tends to eye them up with caution until we get close and he's worked out whether he wants to woof at them or lick them! if i spot them before he does, i get him to sit and he's fine.
its the getting out of the house thats the problem and initial excitement at being out!

With Jansen he would race out the door into the front garden, so I started telling him sit, once we got out the front, then waited a mintues & set off, and if he started pulling it was straight back in the house, lead off, coat off & then wait 5 minutes until trying again, this helped, as he realised that if he started being a clown as soon as we left the house then no walk.
Rosie snapped her harness today as another elder lab came over for a sniff !
Ive been doing as L-J suggested but with no luck here she just wants to play and gives a play sign...
Now what im doing is if i see a dog/owner i shout is your dog ok to come over and allow them and shes loads calmer as they approach, rather than her breakig my arm off to leap over pmpl
Its a funny old thing and do try all but its different approaches for different dogs !
god knows - Ruby is the same - at yesterdays GT she was pulling and pullin and pulling soo much I was soo embarassed it makes you look such an idiot (as per the lanuguage post hehe) as if you are a lazy person who cant be bothered to train
I have worked soo hard with her lead work since November (was a bit lazy before tbh as she is weeny lab at 20kg she cant pull me over so that doesnt mean you have to work on it) its soul destrying isnt it
I have all the other bits to lead work sorted - she sits nicely to clip on the lead and waits while I lock the front door gets out the car calmly (she used to thrwo herself at the doors to get out ) so I guess it does all come with time eh
hi dont feel down about it.. rosze is 2yrs and still has the come on mother hurry up about her..lol..
i have walked many a time were i have basically gone backwards past my house as she was in one of her not listing moods..lol..
now i walk both mine together walking backwards was not a option for me as i just got tangled up with them and they crossed over eachother so the one o use now is they pull me i stop dead the first time id one this they looked at me as if i was stupid..lmao.. they then sat down and waited..
so i walked forward they followed then pulled again i stopped dead they sat down this time i told them back! and hey they now stop and walk back to my side if i stop walking..
so try the stop walking instead see if that works? every time he pulls you stop, there are loads of tricks out there its just finding the best one for your dog
the intial get lead out does send my lot into a bit of a frenzy so i put mine outside before i attempt to go near the collars and leads..lol. then they know if they dont sit calmer they wont be getting them put on at all...
rosze on her own does embarress me sometimes as i know she can heel and can come back when called but sometimes well you just have to go with it and think bad day bad day...lol..tomorrow is another day..lol

hehehe I know all about embarrassing. I have worked really hard with lead training my older three - on their own they are really good and can focus on me well (well Doobs does have his - 'I'm not listening to you moments still). But put them together and they really forget all the hard work I have put in. They will not heel! I have come home in tears sometimes where they have played up together. Then add in children with the walk and I am asking for trouble
No you are definitely not alone I even took mine to one to one heel training - grasped very quickly and Clover is very good on the lead when she is out (Hally can be a little more awkward and is very powerful ) - but see other dogs, and particularly when they initially at shows and it is like - WOW - Part time
The irony is, Hally will walk lovely with me off lead and won't wander to see other dogs
Too early to tell what Solo is going to be like, but judging by her reactions when she sees the other two, probably exactly the same

She is only a pup - what type of harness are you using? I am not sure they are recommended for dogs under 12 months.
