I have a few questions for you people that show, i am thinking of showing and would be very interested in your answers, Very Happy

Is showing addictive?

How many shows do you attend in a year?

Do you say i going to attend so many but then go to more?

Do you show more in the winter/summer or about the same?

Are your other halfs behind you and those of you who have children are they fine with it?

Do you go on your own or do your families come with you?

" Is showing addictive? "

Yes. To varying degress depending on your personality, quality of dog and finances.

" How many shows do you attend in a year? "

Many less than hardened show folks because I attend at least an equal amount of working events too but probably 20 shows or so.

" Do you say i going to attend so many but then go to more? "

No I have a very clear idea of where I will go and who I will show under and if anything I enter some and don't make it for various reasons. But i don't plan a certain amount a year in terms of numbers, its how the judges fall and how my dogs are looking.

" Do you show more in the winter/summer or about the same? "

I show more in the summer. Or I should say I go to more CHAMPIONSHIP shows in the Summer, and more OPEN shows in the Winter. But generally speaking I show more in the summer than winter.

" Are your other halfs behind you and those of you who have children are they fine with it? "

I have no children. My other half is not keen, he tolerates it. I don't hang about, do my stuff and get back as fast as possible.

"Do you go on your own or do your families come with you?"

No. But once a year my husband will come to Crufts. Otherwise everything is 100% seperate. But others work that differently and go to most stuff together. I just have an undoggy husband.

Hard thing to have though when you vary between 6 and 10 Labradors on the premises Wink Wink

I think you just make a vow at birth to sacrifice as many marriages as it takes to singlemindedly and utterly selfishly plough through life carefully planning your labradors meals and throwing a box meal at your (current) (longsuffering) husband Wink

I have seen horsey wife's husbands in the same boat... Wink

Sharon,

Distance wise I suppose it depends on the judge and if I am getting a new puppy out and about and seen and 'ringcrafted' but I suppose probably 100miles each way would be my upper limit for an Open show and I would go anywhere including Ireland, Scotland and Wales for Championship shows under the right judge, so, with me in brighton that can include overnight stays away.

BUT I would be different to many. Less than some, more than others, that is only me. I am quite driven and have a fair few goals to achieve each year. I also like to think i only pick judges who might vaguely like my type of dog so am not wasting my money trawling the world for total unknowns.

However it IS a pressure, it is, on a relationship. It was probably the undoing of my first marriage... BUT this one I have him further under the thumb... ha ha ha!!!

BUT I must stress, if you just poddle to a few local open shows in a 30 or 40 mile radious, of which there are plenty where you live, a couple of times a month, its enjoyable for the whole family mostly, and it can be bonding, not destructive!

Di

Is showing addictive?

Afraid So Wink

How many shows do you attend in a year?
Oooh - as a novice, I wouldn't even like to hazard a guess Embarassed until recently we have been doing at least one show a weekend, occasionally two, and very occasionally, a mid week one Shocked But - that is now being toned down a little temporarily pending Solo's arrival, and also the fact that Clover has, as yet, to come into season.

Do you say i going to attend so many but then go to more?
As you have to send your entry form off a good while before the closing date, chances are you will enter more than you actually attend

Do you show more in the winter/summer or about the same?
Again for me as a beginner, it is whenever I can get out there. Clover wasn't eligible for showing until mid August, so we tended to do a LOT of shows between September and Christmas; likewise, Solo will be ready for the ring in early August - so am guessing we will start ramping the entries up again around then Embarassed

Are your other halfs behind you and those of you who have children are they fine with it?
Daughter is grown up and got her own life (and likes to think she has control over mine as well Twisted Evil ) - she has been to a couple of shows with me, but typically finds them boring. Stepson also spends most of his weekends with his girlfriend unless there is a footie match on.

On the other hand, my OH is an absolute gem - he comes to most shows with me unless it clashes with a home footie game - and will quite happily take either girl in the ring for me Very Happy

My OH's ex is also a big dog lover and has been to some longer distance shows with me for company Very Happy while we are waiting to go into the ring, she tends to go off and look at the smaller dogs which are where her main passion lies.

Do you go on your own or do your families come with you?
As above - normally my OH comes with me, sometimes I go on my own, occasionally my daughter or my OH's ex come with me Very Happy - and even my dad has been with me once when I first started out
