Hi all,
As dog owners many of you may drive 4 x 4's as I do and live in rural areas. Someone should start a petition on the Downing Street webpage against the hike in road tax expected.
I myself drive a Nissan Terrano 2.7TDI. It does about the same to the gallon as my last "car" which was a petrol Ford Escort 1.8. I have three large dogs, one being Keira my lab, a 3 year old and a 2 year old and live in an area that has extreme weather conditions, for instance, today I would not have got to work had I not had my car. I am in the far north of Scotland.
Is it really fair that people who in some ways, need their much larger car should pay for those who have them as a status symbol.
It is disgusting that I should be punished for needing my car and wanting to feel safe when driving.
I agree with it, I'm afraid. I drive a LandRover Freelander.
However, what I am enraged about is the persistent penalising of the majority of the tax-paying public in the name of green issues, when it is factories and industry that should be made accountable. The general public do so much for the environment already, surely it's time to look at the people who do the most of the polluting???
i have to say i agree with the tax on 4x4 BUT i also think it should apply to other large petrol drinking vehicles....
(i have no problem with people who use the 4x4 as a 4x4 but i hate inner city mothers in their 4x4!!!)
Howver i think the government is missing the point slightly - if they improved public transport that would cut down lots. i know lots of people who work in london but the trains are cramped, dirty and unreliable and therefore they drive!

I actually disagree, and personally think its a good thing.
These large cars create DOUBLE the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen dioxide emissions of a 'normal' car. These are greedy cars, and lets face it, they are no more 'roomy' than an esate car or people carrier. You can fit just as many people & dogs in an estate car, or a passenger carrier without the increased emissions your emitting into the atomosphere.
Unless your actually living very rural and seriously NEED a 4x4 because your house cannot be accessed by normal roads, then i see absolutely no reason for these big cars. So... I can absolutely see the reason they are hiking up the costs. They are trying to lessen the amount of people on the roads with them, which will probably work, even if its only a small percentage - It will still make a difference. If people insist on using these greedy exreme co2 emitting cars, then surely they should have to pay the price? (although, i do think that people living very rurally, who don't have access to 'proper' roads should maybe be exempt, or maybe not have to pay the full wack, but really only if completely needed... Like they actually don't have access to proper roads to get to their farm or house)
Also, i found this....
polls and surveys regularly show that 70-85% of people support measures to deter the use of urban 4x4s, and a YouGov poll in 2004 found that two-thirds of people wanted to see extra taxes for 4x4s
There are a considerable amount of people in favour of this rise. Many people just can't stand seeing these beasts on the roads in cities.

Joanne - I totally sympathise with you living in the wilds so to speak. I think the tax should apply to 4 x 4's in urban areas only.
However, I live in London and the blasted Chelsea Tractors as we call them are a nightmare and a bl**dy pain.
Sorry to sound sexist, but the women who drive them can't park them as it is quite a tight squeeze to fit them into one parking space and the drivers seem to aim them down the middle of narrow roads looking neither left nor right nor willing to slow down, wait or give way.
I also note you say you want to feel safe driving. You are no safer in a 4x4 and in fact, if you hit a child in one they are more likely to die.
Unfortunately, most people feel safer in a 4 x 4 which is why they probably drive the way they do - i.e. with total disregard for any other road user (at least around here anyway)
Linda - my sentiments exactly... i went to south kensington recently and they are everywhere!!!! there is a protest group who operate in london and offer 'authentic mud washes' to large urban 4x4!!!

OK, so where do I fit in, I have a 3.9 l Rangerover which I use to tow the horsebox and our family caravan when we go on holiday (in this country, thus avoiding flights and the pollution they bring) BUT to avoid being too environmentally unfriendly I also have a small 800cc town car which I use as daily transport.
I already pay double road tax as I have two vehicles, obviously I can only drive one at a time. I think the tax should be levied on the amount of use the vehicles have. Not on the fact you have a specific car for a specific job. You cannot tow a horse box safely with a people carrier or simelar. they just don't have the weight capacity. I'm already fed up with paying twice, but I am responcible about my use of my vehicles and do feel that 4x4's shouldn't be used around town, and I practice what I preach
I have a 4 x 4 (a Scenic) but I live in the middle of no-where! We don't have road tax here but we pay to register our cars and that is based on kerb weight, emissions etc - the bigger the car the more the tax. You only pay when you buy a car or re-register. We do pay tolls on our motorways though but they are a bargain and I will pay to use an autoroute than drive in the Uk any day!
It annoys me that when I come to the Uk I see all these huge 4 x 4 ferrying kids to school and in towns. My sister is one - she can hardly manage to drive hers or park with without all the mods cons she has built into the darn thing. There are far more efficient ways of farryig around large families than 4x4s!!
