I ended up leaving a training class because I didn't think the methods worked. At first I thought the trainers of course were right. They described daisy as 'boisterous' (after seeing her for 5 minutes) and that she just needed firm handling...so she was put in a 1/2 check chain and being harshly yanked back whenever she made a move or tried to pull ahead. After a couple of sessions I realised that all this was doing was making Daisy pull more, making my arm and shoulder REALLY sore and that at the end of the day, Daisy isn't boisterous at all - she's just excitable. She actually got bored at their training sessions because once she'd got over the initial 10 mintues of excitement, she was more than capable of walking in a circle around a room to heel and sitting and staying and down and wait and all these things...she didn't need firm handling and being yanked about...just a chance to say hello to other dogs and be stimulated enough to learn new things.
She doesn't go to training now as I feel she's coming along ok without. She has a canny collar to help when she gets over excited on walks, she gets a firm NO or LEAVE if she tries to jump up at people or is being naughty and although she still shoots off after other dogs to say hello I've seen that she is slowly improving and calming down.
Like many have said - you know your dog better than a trainer...and as time goes on you know what works and what doesn't. Have confiedence in yourself and as long as your dog is behaving to the level you wish and not causing anyone else any problems, then you're doing a fine job

The troube is too many trainers use a certain method to train all dogs.
This does not work for at least half of them

Blimey - did you SEE my first post on the thread if you want waffle
I do feel strongly on this topic, yes indeedy, so EITHER need to waffle or be short and sweet because otherwise a novel would form
