Strictly speaking, I think we should not trim tails for show but I know loads do cos lots of the show labs do not posess the standard 'otter tail' so trimming makes it look so much better.
Tottie's breeder did hers at her first champ show and it looked brill - she told me strictly not to touch it before the show
I do it occasionally now but don't think it looks as good

Actually, the twisty bit at the end of the tail that is often trimmed (so I was told) is one of the signs of an excellent and correct coat! Both my labbies have the correct otter tail but because Blue has a fabulous coat too she just looks incredibly hairy if her tail is not trimmed!
