I had always ridden since a small child, i had a 2 ponys but gave up when i was 16 and didn't get back into it till 4 years ago when i was 34.
I then got a lunatic mare called sophie - Welsh section D, what a mistake that was, she used to love to try anything to get me off.
But then i got Ollie, he is Thoroughbred X Irish Draught. 16hh grey I have had him for 3 years next month - he is great, a real sweetie and now i can't imagine what life was like before him.
Awwww Ollie sounds lovely Dawn.... I do love Irish Draughts and I have a soft spot for Thoroughbreds too, as I used to look after a couple of ex-racers.
It is usually this time of year that I really miss having a horse....I loved it when their summer coat was coming through (no more clipping) and lovely long hacks in the sunshine.....but I have to admit I don't miss those cold wet winter mornings and cold dark evenings....washing mud off legs, changing umpteen rugs, shovelling barrow loads of poo morning and night and having permanently chapped hands from soaking haynets, etc.
I don't think I'll ever own another now but I still have the horse addiction and have to have my regular fix, even if I don't ride.
Used to ride a lot as a youngster, but like you have all said, marriage, kids, work etc.
I went back to it about 8 years ago and it was as a result of difficulties I experienced .... that were more than just my age ......... I discovered I had rheumatoid arthritis
So, although I've not given up hope completely, my riding days are very much numbered.
Anyone who's thinking of going back though should really think seriously, its a wonderful activity ........ and very good for muscle tone and general fitness.

Too true
Although getting up at 3 am to be at a horse show 4 hrs away never seemed to bother me when i was younger Neither did the getting back to the stables at 9 pm and having to pack straw under sweat blankets until the horses were dry...
I had a lovely 14hh New Forest Gelding when I was 13, but he was a bit of a skinny min and I sold him at 17 to get something a little bigger, which never happened. Whilst I was saving hard, I fell pregnant with my Steph, and the rest is history
I dont miss the 4am cold starts and hosepipe baths My sis-in-law allows me to get my fix whenever I feel the urge

No it didn't bother me that I worked 7 days a week, starting at 6am or earlier every weekend, looking after other peoples horses for them because they were rich enough/too lazy to do it themselves (at least it meant I could afford to keep my one )....I just loved being totally immersed in horseyness....Plus I could take my boys with me and it meant, that when other kids their age were stuck infront of a TV screen or on a computer game.....mine were either riding, or charging up and down a muck heap having wheelbarrow races....or some other equally dirty but fun time out in the fresh air, in all weathers....much more of a healthy lifestyle.
I'd do it all again in a flash, if my back would let me.
