I have a problem at work and not sure where to start.
I have been there for 6 years as an administrator and last year they decided to bring in a Manager to manage aspects of the job, I wanted to apply for it but was told I was not what they were looking for as I didnt have a degree and the experience. Well the joke was sure I don't have a degree but I had been already doing the job for 5 years. When the new person started I was very supportive until the important bits of my job, the enjoyable stuff, got taken away and given to her. We all then had to go through a regrading and as I had lost the important stuff I didnt move up a grade as i had hoped but remained where I had been for 4 years.
I have asked for more interesting tasks, for career advancement but it has fallen on deaf ears as if they give me them it will lose my boss points. I have applied for other another job but I wasn't successful as I didnt have the one skill I have been trying to get but in a catch 22 situation. After the interview I got feedback and was told that having looked at my job spec why wasn't i a grade higher, I approached my boss gently about this last week and she blew a fuse, since then I have been in Coventry. She has been rude, ignored me blatantly and was really off hand with me. I spent all day Wednesday in tears and nearly walked out. So yesterday I decided to talk to my other boss who is above the Manager.
I explained what had happened, about wanting to do more work, the way I had been spoken to, but I ended up coming out of there having taken the blame for the whole lot! I got a lot of " oh I am sure she wouldn't have done/said that, she is too professional to have done x y and z" of course I couldnt think of a reply then, at 2am I could, but not then!
I am of course going to apply for more jobs and hope to get the hell out of there asap, but what do I do in the meantime? Another colleague has the same problem her boss gets her to do all the difficult tasks but she get the points on her score as she is the boss and has overall responsibility and when challenged says that is just the way it is.
Stinks really foul doesn't it.
Anyway has anyone any advice on how to handle it whilst I am still there? I am a member of the union but my 2nd boss who I spoke to is the person I would have to complain to in the union, oh what a joy.
she has to take her boss hat off and put her union hat on when you are wanting to talk to her on a union basis...until then i wouls sugest you work to rule...or contract you dp wat you are paid to do as i dont see your boss complaining that you are refusing to do her job..sorry thats really all i have hopefully someone else will be along with more help..i'm more of a reble without a clue lol
Just been reading your other thread and thinking about this one.
I know what it is like to be undervalued in a job and am glad that you are looking for something else.
What I wanted to say is that if you are a member of a Union you don't have to go to the nearest representative. Is it a national one or just in the company you work for?
When I needed a rep from my Union I didn't want to go to the one in the building because he was the husband of the woman I had issues with. (In the end I left the job just before Christmas last year because my health was being affected so much.)
I will look into approaching someone else from the union, it is a nationwide one so will see what I can find.
I was speaking to other colleagues this mornng and moral is so low here, it used to be a nice place to come and work but now people just can't be bothered with things.
If you dont mind rocking the boat a bit (and they CAN NOT sack you for this or its unfair dismissal ) i would write a formal letter of grievance with regards to your boss, and note exactally what has been happening and her attitude towards you. They must investigate this and try to resolve it, if they do not and you FEEL forced to look for another job once again you can take them to the tribunal as you have been forced from your position. Good luck and drop me a pm if you want to chat/run ideas past!
Well its time to stand up for yourself!! Say it with me 'I CAN DO IT!!!' honestly though thats why people like her get away with it.
Im an Admin/HR/Finance Manager for a small firm (hoping to move soon). Basically im stuck in an office on my own and do everything thats involved in the office from answering phones, prep accounts and disaplinary procedures (think the term is general dogs body )
GET IT ALL WRITEN DOWN ON PAPER
when where and what, the more you have down the more ammo you have.
i would personally go back to the second boss and say i want to take it further as i'm not at all happy at the way you have delt with it and now want to make it an official complaint ( you are not paid to take that)
good luck and i hope you find another job or win the lottary so you can tell them to stick there job and attitude
Years ago I had a similar problem but my then OH was a director in the same company (Royal Mail) the only advice he gave me was to ask questions, question everything that goes on - the culprit usually cannot give you an answer. Like Caspar says write everything down and go back to the 2nd line of management. State your grievances when they try and fob you off again ask them how they are going to deal with it - question, question, question. If they aren't prepared to deal with it they usually cannot answer your queries. Then it's time to go above them but make sure they know you are going higher - by this stage they are usually crapping themselves and will sort it out.
