I've been posting on here on and off since christmas about Ben being sick, virtually daily. Anyway, decided yesterday after some replies on here that it is probably the metacam. But, as he has been on this on and off for four years, I don't believe it is a reaction to the metacam as such, but am now thinking it could be an ulcer caused by the metacam. Bizzarely, I had the same thing last year myself following a course of diclofenac! I have checked the symptons and they do seem to fit (although I know that can be a dangerous assumption!). And, again, the odd thing is the treatment would be the same as I had myself - down to the same medication! Does anyone have any experience of their dog having an diagnosed ulcer and, if so, what were their symptoms?

I will take him back to the vet on Monday to discuss it with him, but often people on here have got really useful info and advice.

Thanks

I don't know but like you say the symptoms you've described could fit going on those a (human) family member had for years of unknowingly suffering with a stomach ulcer.

How is an ulcer diagnosed? Endoscopy?

Well, with me last year they just went on my symptons although I did have the blood test to see if I had the ulcer bacteria - which I didn't, so I think there is a difference between having an ulcerated stomach and having a proper ulcer if you see what I mean.

Anyway, have spoken to the vet and he agrees with me that Ben probably does have an ulcerated stomach due to the prolongued use of the metacam and he has told me to give him Zantac which I will do later (have to wait until one hour before feeding), but that if he is still being sick by Monday/Tues then I they will want him in for blood tests.

I think the timing of the bouts of sickness tie in as I remember I was always at my worst before I was due to eat, when I was hungry so perhaps those people who suggested it was 'hungry sick' weren't far off, after all!

Will see how he is over the weekend....fingers crossed!

Milo had stomach ulcers back in September!!
He had kept being sick for a few days. I put it down to him eating something he shouldn't have so starved him ( like you do with tummy bugs) He was ok for a couple of days then was sick again! This time it was brown almost black. I thought that wasn't right and took him to the vets where they kept him in and did an endoscopy and found he had ulcers! Shocked I never thought dogs could get them! Anyway after several days to'ing and fro'ing and stays in hospital, Milo was eventually diagnosed with Lungworm! Shocked
I've had to change his food and I have to be careful with what he eats because he's developed allergies! Fortunately he's not your typical greedy Lab, only eats dog food NOT human food! Shocked Shocked Smile (apart from the occasional sausage from the tea van on our weekend walks! Wink )

So if I were you I'd get Ben to the vets asap!

Coco has very similar but she's not been on pain meds and it's not an upset tummy as we've perfect poohs still! She is however producing excess stomach acid. She's sick (when she was doing it regularly) about 7 hours after eating. So we now feed 3 times a day and she takes Zitac which educes gastric acidity but she did have an ultrasound and the vet could see nothing unduly nasty apart from the acid.

Sounds disgusting but what colour is the sick? Cocos is nearly always yellow and if there is any sign of food in it she eats it again (oh goodness, feels faint and very slightly bilious at the very thought).

Hi, Zak had the same problem last year, vet gave him zitac to stop the production of stomach acids for 2 days then they were going to give him Zantac to line the stomach before he was fed, being such a big lad the dosage is always high and quite expensive so i asked the vet if I could give him pepto bismal instead (always have it in the house for us) checked his bible and said yes. Wink
Zak was having 10ml that I had to squirt into his mouth from a syringe cause it tastes bl***y disgusting Sad . The first dose was easy because he didnt know what was coming, when it was time for the 2nd dose I had to block him into a corner in the kitchen, managed to squirt it in his mouth, rubbed under his chin to make him swallow it, job done Very Happy then he shook and it went all over the kitchen Smile Smile I was cleaning off pink splashes for days they were popping up every where Laughing Laughing

Thanks for the comments. The sick is always yellow and looks like the sauce you get with a chicken korma curry! He is being sick quite a while after food - ie when he starts to get hungry as I know from my own experience that this is the time the stomach acids start to kick in and can cause pain.

He is perfectly normal in every other way and his poohs are completely normal and there is no blood, or dodgy looking stuff in either his sick or his pooh. I have given him his first Zantac about half an hour ago and he hasn't been sick this afternoon which will be the first time he hasn't been sick at this time all week. I will wait to see if he is sick in the night, but, if not, I think we may have cracked it!

Will defo take him to the vets if he is not right by Monday.
As for lungworm - are there any other symptoms for that? How do they get it? I remember reading something on it ages ago, but can't remember now.

Ps...
We did take a sample of his sick to the vets when we went first time (about 10 days ago) and he said it looked fine and there was nothing dodgy about it and it hasn't changed since.

Back to lungworm - is that the one that has to be 'in your area'?
Also, I just checked a lungworm website and he is not experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned.

Lungworm is picked up from slugs and snails! Even their trails can be contaminated! I get a lot of them in my garden and I find it hard to get rid of the damn things!! Evil or Very Mad
Not sure what the signs are to look for! Milo was vomitting a lot and lost about 5kgs in about a week! The vet looked into allsorts of diseases/conditions before they reached this conclusion. They did think at one stage it was SCI that's been happening lately in local woods. I only really found out it was Lungworm when I received correspondence from the insurance company and the vet told them it was Lungworm!

I can't offer any more advice but wanted to send some healing vibes and hope the vet will soon get to the bottom of Ben's symptoms. We all know how awful it is to be sick with the bile from an empty stomach, very unpleasant, bless him
