A horrible wet and windy day yesterday but bundled up to take Rolo out for a walk. Went to a local NT woodland and had a nice walk despite the weather.
Had got Rolo back in the car and was about to drive off when I spotted a dog wandering in the road.
I got out immediately and called the dog so it was out of danger of any passing cars. I honestly expected to see an Owner run up and find out where the dog had disappeared to. But minutes went by and nobody materialised.
The dog was a spaniel, had the look of a CKCS but was bigger than they usually are. He was drenched and shivering and limping slightly on his front paw. There were two other cars in the car park. I had seen one set of dog walkers during my time out, so I was presuming the other car was this poor guys Owners and they had become separated. He was very nervy and I didn't want him to run off again before his Owner came back so I got Rolo's lead from the car and managed to clip it to his collar. While doing so I checked and he had no id or name tag
Well to cut a long story short, (ish) I waited and waited and nobody came.
The two cars gone - I checked with them and they hadn't seen anyone else on their walks. So after staying there for almost an hour and not knowing quite what to do I phoned my vet for advice and subsequently took him to them.
Of course the first thing they did was check for a microchip .. nothing!!
I'm waiting for a call from them today to let me know how he is and if he has been claimed yet. Poor little mite, I hope he finds his Mum and Dad again. I went back to the car park this morning and put a notice up that a dog had been found and gave the vet's details.
But the moral of the story is PLEASE get your dog chipped if you haven't done so already. Tags can fall off or get lost. Microchips are forever!
I know I am pretty much preaching to the converted on this site, but in case you haven't had it done yet .. it really is worth it.
I'll let you know how this little guy's story ends as soon as I can. Lets all hope it's a happy ending.

and the same goes with cats. bailey was chipped when we got him from breeder, but the thought honestly never crossed our minds to get the cats done. now one is missing we realise the importance so much more. he had a collar and name tag, but with cats especially these can so easily be lost. and if thats the cae with our cat no one will know hes ours if they dont take him somewhere where we have left his details if he had a microchip he may well have been home by now. if he does return he will be getting chipped straight away, as will our other cat
Well done, Jilly. I did a thread a while back about the importance of having some form of ID on our pets, having at that time just managed to return an escaped dog with none whatsoever on him to his owner.
A microchip would have helped your vet no end there.
My cat and Charlie are chipped, but getting information on Topsy's microchip status (cocker spaniel) has been very difficult/impossible due to brother-in-law's divorce (she came to us from him) and his now almost nomadic lifestyle. I think I shall just have to pop into the vets and ask the nurse to check her - and get her sorted myself as necessary.
The vet just called me to say no one has contacted them about a missing dog and at the end of today they will hand him over to the local dog warden
I was chatting to the receptionist that called and I said I can't believe that if you lost your dog you wouldn't call round every single vet in the area and she said as he had no form of ID at all, he might have just been dumped
