Just wondered...there seems to be a pop psycologist coming up with a reason for everything we do nowadays...
So...anyone know of any pop pyscologist interpretation as to why we call our dogs the names we do?
IE what does it say about us if we have given our dogs a human name ( Barney, George, Alfred etc) ..and then what have they read into us giving a one syllable or two syllable name. What if we have given our pet a name like Bonzo or Smudge?
Or maybe it's just a name or do the so called experts say that it says something about our inner self? Anyone heard anything?
Am gonna blame Chris for Smudge's name as he chose it, but then I did get to choose the breed and colour!
I'm not sure why he chose that name but it seems to suit the little fella! If we're going for inner selves, and I had chosen the name, perhaps you could say it's because I'm left handed and as a child I used to 'Smudge' everything I wrote?! But as Chris chose and he is right handed, I guess we'll have to knock that one on the head! lol!
I had thought about 'Lycos' too - being a black lab and me spending so much time on t'net but Chris wouldn't let me! I also liked Archie and think it is sooooo cute when pets have human type names! Our next door neighbours cat was called Roger and it made me laugh so much! The neighbours here have named their cat Rocky!
Do we subconsciously attribute more human qualities to human named pets than those just called 'spot' or the likes???
I'm always being told off by my friends and husband to have children because clearly my boys are treated as my human substitutes.....but I profess my innocence with - "at least I dont dress them in clothes" - (just for our fancy dress parties..)
Buster wouldn't have been my first choice of names but my daughter wanted him to be called that after her childhood dog.(when Buster wasn't such a common name)
Having said that the name suits him down to a tee
I think sometimes people read too much into things.
Kev
ps Nic, I think Smudge is a nice name and at least you won't have other dogs running to you when you shout him in the park
I am not too sure about "deeper" meanings to naming our labs, our thinking went along the lines of Labs = water so we named them after it. Hence the names Tarn, Loch, Burn and Rill. Then again maybe we are just stupid?
CJ was named by friends of mine (they are MPD) all had a say and came up with Callum or Jake, could`nt make their minds up which on to use hence CJ , he does get his full name when he`s naughty!!, knows what it means too
We spent ages thinking about a name for ours. Then our youngest said 'Mario' - it's a really funny computer character that races around the place really fast. Our eldest was happy as Mario is apparently (?) a famous footie players name. Hubby and I weren't totally convinced until we went to see him for the 1st time - and Mario (pop man) was playing on the radio in the background and that was that. It seemed our minds had been made up for us....
Having said that, we haven't heard of another Mario and our vets also says he's their one and only.
