Hell all. I live in the US and am about to get a lab pup from UK lines. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get some information about the ancestors of my dogs. He has a lot of Drakeshead dogs in his pedigree. My understanding is that the Drakeshead kennels are fairly active in the working dog circles over there. I would be interested in finding out any information that I can, possibly including pictures of any of the ancestors.

The sire and dam's pedigrees are here:
http://castleheightsgundogs.tripod.com/id4.html

The dam is Miss Molly May, the top half of the bottom pedigree.

Thanks for any help you can give me.
Dawson

Hello and welcome to LF.

I too have been trying to research my dogs pedigree but haven't got very far. Hopefully someone will come along and tell us how to do it!

What i can tell you is that my dog is related to yours through the Drakeshead line. several on your pedigree also appear on ours!

Good luck with the research.

You can sometimes google some of the names, but it doesn't always work.

Here are a couple of links that I know of which might help, but they are not totally comprehensive databases by any means.

http://labrador.retriever.free.fr/recherche.php?lang=en
http://www.labradornet.com/index_e.html

The first is a French website with English translation, but is a little quirky and you can sometimes have to try the link a couple of times if it doesn't come through in English at first.

It is true that Drakeshead breed working lines labs over here. My Charlie is related to your dog, particularly via Haretor Mark of Drakeshead, as are a number of others on here. He was an important stud dog of his era and a Field Trials Champion, I do believe, as were some of his offspring. I understand that Drakeshead has produced quite a few of those, but I am willing to stand corrected on anything I have said. Very Happy

Helen.

What do you want to know? I have a range of links on my website showing people where they can look for details on dogs Very Happy

http://www.arghishalee.co.uk/Links1.html

Have you tried listing the information you are looking for on a Family Tree thread on here? It is very rare that you won't get someone come back with details of dogs etc

As someone else suggested Google is also quite often a good place to start Very Happy

Once you start getting past five generations or so, it is a good idea to get some form of software to help you along - I use Breedmate (www.breedmate.com ) as recommended by JohnW, but I know there are others on the forum who use a range of software, all of which are just as good

Sue

Thanks for all the great responses! That Labrador database is really interesting.

I notice that several dogs in the pedigree have the FTCH title which I assume if a Field Trial Champion. Is there a governing body over there that might have and archive of photos of past champions? Over here the American Field, AKC and Bird Dog Hall of Fame sometimes have things like that.

Thanks again for all your help, I think is really neat to hear from folks over there that have dogs that are related to mine, some fairly closely.

DH

We have the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom:

http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/

I don't know whether they can give you any photos though. I haven't tried it. You could contact them and see if they can point you in the right direction though.

Helen.

Your best bet would be to contact Nick Ridley. He photographs most top events including the IGL Retriever Championship. His website is:-

http://www.nick-ridley.20m.com/

And there is a "Contact" link at the bottom of his site. At a quick look at his site I see he has removed the IGL photos from his site to make room for later events, but he will I feel sure still have them.

As to Drakeshead, this is one of the very top working kennels of all time in this country, with a record 7 wins of the IGL Retriever Championship, plus many places!

Regards, John

Edited to say, looking at the pedigree of the dam of your dog, Breeze of Drakeshead won the Retriever Championship for a record 3 consecutive times, 1985/86/87.
