This rather sounds like a general ownership and obedience training programme not gundog training.
Was there something on the site that made you think it was specifically gundog training? I can't find any mention of anything other than obedience and general good manners training...
Certainly at 6 months its the perfect age to start. Where in the country are you? Private training is expensive and you really don't know if these sort of people are any good. Joining gundog clubs and societies would be a better bet and go to training at their group sessions held under kennel club and club rules for kind handling and methodical methods (some private gundog trainers still use a lot of heavy handed harsh methods - not all but some and its hard to say who does and doesn't).
Its best to joina number of gundog societies, go to some classes and if you like the trainer who takes the club class ask if they do private sessions... its a GREAT way because they almost always do.
let me know where you are and I can give you all your counties clubs.

Well you mentioned gundog training and so that was the sort of training I thought you meant. By 6 months a well mannered pup will usually have been through 1 or 2 seasons of general obedience or puppy training.... is this what you seek, you tell me? Is it just general manners and good all round obedience or specific gundog training you seek?

Do we do obedience classes first or do we go straight for gun dog training?
We only have 2 local obedience classes. 1 we went to once and i said never again. The trainer insisted on check chains and im not happy with that. The other is a pre booked course. Next starts in May.
Several people have suggested that we get him trained to work. This is where we have no idea as to where we start.
Now im feeling really thick! I have looked at so much info on the internet, much of it is conflicting! Therefore, im back to square and feeling totally clueless.

hi i live fairly local to you i found it difficult to find gundog training in this area last year i went to Dove Valley Working Gundog Club the classes were very good they were in the Derbyshire area at various locations this year they are at one site if you want more information email me and i will give you a phone number to contact them Ann
I know nothing at all about this person so can only talk generally.
Sending a dog away for training is an expensive thing. And without knowing the trainer and their methods, I can only say that some are rather heavier handed than I would want. They cannot fail or they will not get dogs for training so if a dog is a little slow on the uptake or a little rebelious then results have to be attained by a specific date because the next dogs are coming in then so the kennel will be needed.
There is no compulsion for a trainer to belong to a club, but most people, if competing in gundog work will belong to a few at least. So I checked the membership lists of the few I'm a member of and could not find him there. OK, it's only a few, but the Labrador club and the United Retriever Club are both big clubs with natinal membership.
So, the long and the short is, I can tell you nothing. Sorry.
Ok, well think on it this way, do you wish to work your dog on a shoot? Or take part in competitive gundog working tests? OR do you just want to get a firm footing in good canine manners and obendience that maybe might be a few steps above what you could train the park or at home?
Its no real use training your dog to 'work' if you don't plan to 'work it' as such... you know? But thats no dismissal of wishing it to have excellent manners, that falls under general obedience training.

If he was trained we would have the opportunity to work him on a shoot. A friend of ours has a farm and regularly holds shoot meetings (if thats what the are called). His Gamekeeper was going to help us out but he is unavailable at the moment. I haven't been able to get hold of him to ask him these questions. So yeas he would work but just for fun.
I am interested in competitive trails too. There are alot of FT CH in his pedigree and it would be good if that could be carried on.
So i guess that it depends on Shadows suitability for training and more importantly, are we trainable?
I don't really want to send him away from the family for 6 months. Is this necessary? I know he would be trained more quickly, but like John said, you don't know how they are treated. I would rather not train him at all than send him away and be treated heavy handedly.
