Hi Becs,

AI is a complex issue. The thing is, with careful handling and support when tied for dog or bitch if they start to struggle or panic or just plain object, little harm comes to either. Its when people leqave them to it that problems and difficulties occur.

AI has up till fairly recently not been approved by the kennel club except under very particular circumstances (such as the dog being outside the Uk and the bitch having had a naturally conceieved litter before hand). Rules have loosened a little lately but not a great deal (the sire can come from the Uk now but has to be dead and so stored semen used from his younger years)

Of course some use AI and just don't tell the kennel club. If it is two dogs in this country so no paperwork needs doing to say the semen was shipped in from abroad some consider 'why tell them?!'.

It is commonplace to use AI in North America even if you had both dogs in the same room. I find this a most disturbing trend as it is mostly 'incase' of injury to either or 'to avoid' any sexually transmitted diseases. Dogs have been mating naturally since the dawn of time its wrong I feel to turn it into an entirely conlical proceedure amongst experienced breeders who could easily handle a stud dog with a bit of effort!

I hope our AI rules don't relax too far and allow AI matings to be demanded by bitch owners 'incase' of disease... it all makes me very uncomfortable at the probabilitity as what happens 'there' (USA) tends to eventually happen 'here'.

Also conception rates are around 65% with AI in two healthy parents. With natural matings it rsises to around 85/87%. A considerable jump.
