Posted: Mon Feb 26, 2007 8:49 am Post subject: KSS Seminar - thanks
Just a note, as so many of us where there yesterday, to thank Karl (Waterbrook) and of course Karen (Karimwood) and everyone else who helped at the KSS seminar yesterday who is part of LF or lurking
I certainly enjoyed myself but have never been so nervous in all my life... well probably... The advanced bit was no walk in the park and walking into the closed room to hear if you had passed or failed infront of a panel of three...well....words fail me.... all I can say is I now know how they feel on Xfactor
Hope everyone enjoyed it, sorry we all didn't get much of a chat as mostly we were all doing different things all day....
Thanks again - I know how much work and stress organising these things are.
Best all
Di

Well done to all who passed (didn't envy the ones doing the advanced at all!!) and thanks to Karl, Karen and everyone else for working so hard to get it all to come together on the day
Thank you Karl and everyone who was involved with the seminar.I had a great day,Mind you who wouldn't a whole day talking about Labradors.
I even passed Kennel club hands on Assessment with Carole Coode.I was sooo nervous,But she put me at ease,( I can hear Alison saying i told you so.)
Well done Di,Your assessment was way harder than what i did,And as i was in the room, while you and the others were being assessed.I am so pleased that i was only handling the dog.
Also it was nice to meet Lucy sue51 and of course Alison Charley Farley looked great on the stage,
Was lovely to meet you too Linda Cooohh yes the cakes!! And Brenda's chilli! Yum yum!
I was nervous and quite honestly cr@pping my pants at handling Di's dogs....my first time handling went ok as far as I know (the candidates can't fail because someone handles the dog wrong can they???? omg panic panic panic)...however, handling is nothing in comparison to what the advanced cert peeps had to do....no wonder they were all so twitched!
ok I'll embarrass myself and ask ... what is a KSS Seminar and what have I got to congratulate you on passing?
Don't be embarrassed! If you don't ask then you'll never know! I'll try to explain as best I can but bear in mind I know bugger all
KSS is short for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Labrador Retriever Club and the seminar was a whole day event run by the club aimed at a variety of Labrador people (future judges, current judges, vets, peeps who just want more information about the breed - basically anyone!).
The morning consisted of an expert panel (judges and breeders etc) giving a presentation about the breed standard, discussing further the character, purpose, temperament etc and then they discussed critique writing and judging appointments...things like conduct, formality, dresscode....plus loads more!
In the afternoon everyone was split into groups. The most basic assessment (ha ha she says) was the Kennel Club Hands On Assessment. In a nut shell, identifying all the land marks of a Labrador like eyes, coupling, stifle, pasterns etc and then describe and identify the angulation of a Labrador while being guided and scores kept by a tutor. To pass they had to get 46 (?) out of 50 right.
The next group up were the Novice Judging assessment people - this involved a hands on assessment as above with a discussion about breed judging at novice level and then they were given personal feedback from the panel assessing them based on their discussion.
The top group were the Advanced Judging assessment peeps (this was one of the groups I handled a dog in omg omg omg) this was a toughy and was what Di took part in and passed They had to individually judge as they would if they were a judge at a show, placing dogs in order of merit and present a critique of the dogs to the panel either written or verbal. The panel had already judged the dogs before the assessment began and the candidates had to place as close to what the panel had done in order to have passed.....
That's about it as far as I can explain it - Karl, Alison, Di......edit, amend, correct me if I'm wrong anywhere
Always wondered what the judges are looking for when Im in the ring
That's why I went Fay
From what I gathered (was a bit blinded by the knowledge tbh ) the judge is refering to the breed standard in relation to function and purpose as well as beauty So for all the people who think it is a beauty contest out there in the ring, it isn't just about that, it's about how the shape, size and balance of the dog assists in the working ability - the purpose in which the dog was bred for even if they have never worked a day in their lives
