The DERMIS is one of the layers of skin so the vet is prob talking about internal stitches (intraDERMAL) close to the top layer of the skin which will dissolve over time, reducing the need for going back and having them out. Dont quote me verbatim on this but I dont think i'm far wrong! I'm sure all will be fine, deep breath and calm!!!! x
Found this for you Vicky, hope it helps explain what Intradermal stitches area and why they use them

The material is actually passed sideways through the layer of skin, so it is not visible once the closure is complete. The advantage of this "intradermal closure" is that it is more difficult for the animal to remove the stitches by licking or scratching at the site. Another advantage is that since the material is absorbable, an appointment to remove the stitches is not necessary.
I know this is easier said than done but try not to worry about Ruby, I`m sure she`ll be bouncing around again in less than 24 hours after the op
she'll be fine Vicky, I was worried like this when I left Rolo, but they are well looked after, they get a pre-med too. Find yourself a distraction for during the op, in my case it was clothes shopping. I know she's your baby but it's amazing how quickly they get over it.
It does bring a little tear to your eye when you leave, and then when you pick them up they're all wobbly and you can stroke her little pink tummy again
oh Vicky - what are you like .... you'll need more medication than Ruby at this rate infact maybe they could give you a general at the same time as her?
She'll be fine, I just know she will. Deep breaths for the next fortnight and lots of gin on the day!
Hey Vicky, that sounds like the way Sadie had her stitches done, it was a "newer" kind of way and there were no stitches visible on the outside, as they were inside, you can hardly even see the scar now, amazing!
I know its easy to say "try not to worry", but I'm sure she will be fine xx
