Good Evening Everyone,
may i introduce myself my name is Dano and my Wife and Myself have just aquired a rescue Black Lab called Misty. We collected her from The sanctuary yesterday Fri the 24th Feb,i would like to tell you a bit about Misty's history and how she is with us after just one day,and would like any advice from you experience.
As i said we collected her yesterday,we had about 10 miles to travel home in the car and Misty was fine she wasn't sick and seemed to enjoy the journey,as we only had limited information on Misty it was a relief that she wasn't sick,Misty is six years old and had been with her previous family for all of her life except for the first eight months as a pup.She was owned by a game warden who had two pups and kept them in a barn until he decided which pup was the best for his job i presume then offered Misty up for sale.
I have managed to phone the previous owner to ask for any details on Misty but wasn't given to much info only that she will eat anything and has always been timid they blamed that on the game warden she has only been kept in a utility room and never let of the lead.
SO THE PLOT THICKENS.
Hope i am not boring you.
So we are now armed with some information so we have to make our own assessment,Misty was spayed not sure if i spelt that right on Tuesday and was flea treated and wormed on Friday Morning and the vet gave her a clean bill of health.
NOW THE GOOD BITS
Misty walks perfectly on the lead, over the field she comes when she is called and will walk beside you off the lead, she likes other dogs she isn't bothered by cats, she is house trained. In fact she is adorable.Okay i know it has only been one day with her but i am sure she isn't putting on her Sunday best face just for us HA HA .
We are feeding her on Arden Grange, she is picky with that but ate it all over the period of the day perhaps she just isn't sure of it.
NOW THE SLIGHT PROBLEMS.
She will flinch at a sudden noise or movement, she will not leave our side
and want's constant attention is that because this is all new?and she may be missing her old home.Oh by the way the reason given by the previous owner as to her leaving them was work commitments(strange after six years) ummmmm.
Even though she is slightly timid she has so far shown no aggression at all
and finally Boy does she smell problem is i cant bath her until she has had her stiches out next Fri .
So folks please lots of advice if you would because we just love her to bits already
Many thanks for reading this post
Dano
Misty's timidness may be linked to the fact that she's just had a huge upheavel in her life and may settle down after a few weeks.
But then again some dogs are on the timid side. My Fidgit is one of those. She has never been mistreated or abused and yet she is still very timid and startled by loud noises. It's just a confidence thing I think.
I think Misty is very lucky to have found you and I hope she will be very happy with you in her forever home.
Let Misty come out her shell over the next few days, its a huge difference from a kennel to a warm home with lots of noise and comforts!
Agree with the above post about the jumpyness,i havent got a rescue but still having that now with my pup esp NEW noises, you said you dont have much history so id say start back at basics with noises.
Get het used to household noises,cars,lorries,children,999 cars/vans etc and build her knowledge up again.
Im sure that all will come together soon but it will take time,no pressure from you and let her be her!
Best of Luck and please let us know what happens and how things go
It is early days. Give her a chance to settle down and I'm sure her timidness will disappear.
I think you will just have to put up with the smell until after her stitches come out We would love to see some pics of her when she has settled in. Good luck.
I got a resuce last November and she had been badly treated and was really nervous, just take one day at a time and she should eventually settle. Suzie is still wary of men and ('erm large people) and jumps at loud noises, as others have said in some cases they just have a nervous disposition.
Well done for giving her a forever home, I hope you have many happy years with her

Well done for giving Misty her forever home, she will most probably settle down with you in a couple of weeks considering the upheaval she has had.
I cant offer any advice but to play it by ear.........and take each day.........
Have never had a rescue before - but it sounds most likely she's had it a bit rough during her 6 years Give her plenty of love and attention I'm sure she'll come out of her shell very soon
Welcome to LF by the way Let see some piccies of Misty soon
