Hi all

My poor pup has a bit of an icky tum and a lady breeder told me to try giving him goats milk to settle it. Has anyone else heard of this and if it's safe? Also what's the difference between feeding them goats milk and ordinary milk?

My lil man is 9 weeks old and i'm feeding him on Hills puppy dry food. I started giving him a spoonful of wet food but think that may have aggrevated his tummy so i'm going to stop for now.

Thanks for your help

Sammi and Oscar

I would imagine its the wet food that has caused the problem and I think the milk will just make it worse Sad

Dogs can often be lactose intolerant so cows milk in any quantity would give him the runs. I've heard of people giving bitches small amounts of goats milk to induce them to drink after whelping - but not sure if its the greatest thing for a poorly pup.

I would say give him bland food for next next 12-24 hours - so chicken and rice or scrambled egg and rice. Then reintroduce his regular food.

Should have added - if you have wormed him recently, that could be the source of the runs.

I've never had a problem with goats milk, but then I've never had a problem with cows milk either, so I doubt if mine are lactose intolerant. I have in the past used luke warm goats milk and weetabix as an easy meal, for upset tums, or as a meal for mine when following a GA, but again, depends if your dog is able to tolerate wheat, obviously, for weetabix.

As others have already suggested, it's probably the wet food, or possibly worming treatment that has perhaps caused a problem? You really don't need to add anything to a complete diet to make it palateable for your dog, so if he is fine eating whatever you're feeding him, I'd stick to that rather than adding things in.

Daisyyy/Feebarn - Thanks for your replies. Yes he's been wormed and he's had his first lot of jabs. Second ones are due next week so he hasn't been out anywhere yet.

A bland diet sounds like a good idea. Sorry to sound a bit dim, but what are the intention of wet food? Someone else has mentioned not too feed it for the same reason...but typically he really does love it! Now when he gets dried food he turns his nose up!! lol

Thanks

Wet food is pricey! You are paying for water!

Don't make a rod for your own back as well by chopping changing and offering tidbits. He'll very cleverly chose to blank his normal food in favour of the tasty stuff. Put his food down, leave it for 10 minutes and then remove what he doesn't eat.

Offer him fresh food at the next feeding time and don't supplement with anything. He won't starve himself! Be strong! Smile

Thanks Feebarn. It's my first pup can you tell?! I'll stick to the dry food and see how he gets on.

What a cutie pie ♥

Just stick to the dried food or you will end up with him refusing dried food in favour of the meat, as Fee says use the 10 minute rule, any food not eaten within 10 minutes is removed until the next mealtime, he's a lab trust me he won't starve himself
