they have been feeding the pups on pedegree chum,,quite a rich food from what i have heard,,(may or may not be true) the lady was very vague on a lot of things,,alot had already gone to new homes,,, mother wasn't with them,,they are big pups for their age,,and she is going to the vets for a check up on monday,,,it is beyond me as to why she was so eager to get rid so quickly, and she seems to have weened them early, been eating puppy food for a week or so,,,,she didn't give us time to talk to her about them she was on her way out,, even though she knew we was coming,,,
i feel verysorry for the other pups in this litter as i do feel they have been kicked out of their home,
we are introducing her to winalot puppy food and a puppy mixer which she is enjoying,,,sasha is taking a liking to her so that's a good thing,,,but i will be keeping a watchful eye on them both

OK I realise that I am not the taste of the week but there are many of us who don't have healthchecked labs. CD is a rescue dog and those of us who want to give a forever home will not have got him checked. If I did and he was 'faulty' should I have given him up?
Next week he will be checked for health and then I will get him the chop (sorry castration) and I hope that people who are in the same position don't get worried by others who think that we should not take these dogs in because they have not been healthchecked.
Not sure how many people who have labs who are rescues on this list but they are as precious as all other labs.

I think there is a whole world of difference between giving a rescue dog a forever home and choosing to purchase a puppy from non healthchecked parents.
To compare the two, in my opinion, is totally missing the point.
If people remain uneducated on this point and continue to finance these breeders by buying the puppies, the situation will never improve. It is a simple case of supply and demand. If a breeder who does not health check finds that EVERY prospective purchaser demanded the appropriate health certification .. they would have no alternative but to either stop breeding or start breeding WITH health checks.
People who take in rescues are wonderful for doing that and I don't think anybody on this forum would disagree with that. But that isn't the point that is being made here.

" CD is a rescue dog and those of us who want to give a forever home will not have got him checked. If I did and he was 'faulty' should I have given him up? "
Oh Hilary, now I understand your reaction last week on another topic. No no, you have completely the wrong end of the stick entirely! Its not about if your dog is healthtested, its about if the PARENTS were. Rescues are entirely different. The wonderful people who take them on appreciate that there is no history to them and problems may or may not be round the corner. You have no say in how they started life.
Hilary, you say the above paragraph i highlighted. Of COURSE you wouldn't give him up. But you wouldn't if the results came back bad then go on and BREED from him. thats the difference here.
You have been on the forum ages, have you really thought all this was saying rescue dogs were in ferior or something? My GOD how terrible you thought that! No, not at all, its just about when you BUY a puppy and you have a huge choice of litters before any emtotional attachment takes place, you hopefully with education about the pitfalls, buy from litters with health checked parents rather than non health checked.
That surely makes sense? You don't dump dogs bought or rescued that come back with poor health for some reason of COURSE not. But the idea being you don't breed from them.
Gosh I hope that clears this up for you now?

Hi sarah.... I know you didn't and aren't asking for advice or help, but can I just make a few points that the breeder very rudely obviously didn't help you with - ignore this if you find it bossy
- At the healthcheck make it clear your pups age. The pup will need worming so make sure the vet gives you some Drontal for Puppies. Don't buy worming tablets from a pet shop.
- I really wouldn't use tinned meat and biscuit for a puppy this age. Really wouldn't. A 5 week old puppy should be having 4 or 5 meals a day of soaked complete puppy formlua. Please do but one, something like Oscars, james Wellbeloved, Burns something like that. The sack is expensive but will last ages for a single pup of this age. Weeks and weeks.
Put about 25 gms in a measuring jug. Boil a kettle. Pour water over just to cover the food. let it sit for 15 mins or so to soak. Give it a bit of a mix. Feed it when it is still quite warm but not burning to the touch. Throw any away not eaten each meal.
Really 7am, 12pm, 5pm and 9pm would be ideal right now for feeding puppy.
You may have trouble getting the pup to eat first few days once it realises there is no competition from litter mates, if this does happen put your hand in the bowl and fight for the food like another puppy would. It releases a familiar memory that is comforting and they start to fight to eat against you (but of course win - grin)
Its great you have another dog. That will help enormously. Don't try and seperate them at night for now as the other dog will be a huge comfort.
Please do ask anything at all - start new threads so we don't miss anything.

Di,
I understand what you are saying exactly on health tested parents, our new arrival today Pepper is a lab cross,, even though we could have searched and searched for another pedigree lab, but we chose her, knowing full well that we don't know what health problems may or may not arise and we are prepared to love her for what she is and what she will become, a loving family pet,
I know what we have done (taking a chance on her and taking this puppy in so young) is not what many people would do so i don't take offence to people speaking their mind and giving their opinion,
i feel better for not turning my back on her just because her breeder was thick and didn't have a clue,
we have no intentions of breeding either of our dogs just loving them as best we can.

No please, forget all that - I am worried about this little 5 week old with you - its smallfry compared to raising this one over the next couple or three weeks as they would of been. ALTHOUGH, that said its important to say that the breeder sounds SO shoddy and uncaring with their attitude to you and the pups that maybe the pup is better off with you than her in this circumstance.
i hope you say my tips above on feeding and worming and so on... you might find it useful...
Your vet will tell you to get the pup on Hills Science Diet chances are - be prepared, smile sweetly and say you'll think about it and feed one of the brands mentioned in my post above or another quality one. Suopermarkets are not the best place at all for buying dog food any half decent pet shop will sell the Burns, James Wellbeloved or Oscars OR another brand which should be around £30 for a 15kg sack or there abouts and have meat as its main ingredient.
Tinned meat just isn't suitable for a puppy this age... honestly, even though it says 'puppy' your puppy is not what they are referring to - your puppy is still in stock terms a 'weaner'..... should be still just weaning. I don't even stop my pups sucking from my bitch now and then till 6 weeks usually...
Good luck!
Di
