Well done Di, for this excellent post.
I often wonder how many people are put off this forum by advice and information, delivered in such a way that it can sometimes sound very judgmental. It's usually the people that would benefit most from the forum.

Firstly I'd just like to say to Lucy that you have NOTHING to be ashamed of, but I respect your reasons for not wanting to make public how you and Pheebs came together
I bought Ellie from a newspaper article almost 7 years ago, not knowing anything about health checks etc. I was lucky however, as Ellie came from parents with hip scores, eye tests (not optigen) and elbow scores complete with all the KC paperwork.
Having said that, Ellie has now developed mild HD, which is being kept at bay through Hydrotherapy and Glucosamine, and it always niggles me that if I had known how important it was to limit exercise/climbing stairs etc in the pups first year, maybe it could all have been avoided...
Great post, thank you Di

Hi Di
Thanks for this. As a new member and having got a bit of an 'ear-bashing' in another recent thread (Hip Dysplasia and puppies), I welcome your contribution.
Most of us just want the best for our companions. Even those ones to be. The little puppies we're getting in two weeks don't come from professional, selective, knowledgable breeders. And I dare say most owners using this forum are like me. So we've made our choice based on gut instinct - parents loved and healthy - and, more important, owners genuine. You can pick out the bad apples (usually!).
So this forum should be a place to help and support as newbies! To learn, participate and pass on knowledge for the betterment of the breed. My message for the professionals - please be gentle with us!
Paul

That'll teach me to read back what I have written...
| Quote: | | when the bitch we bought from a very reputable breeder at 1 year old to our shock and amazement produced a litter of 6 puppies 2 months later..(she had had a secret liaison with the stud dog just before we bought her.. ) |
Well accidents DO happen ......At least if your bitch came from reputable stock and so did the Stud, then her parents and him must have been health checked; so at least you had that information to give your potential new owners.
I am surprised though, that if the person you got her from was that reputable, she/he didn't offer to take the pups off your hands once they were weaned....as the *mistake* did lay firmly in their hands.

I would agree that you have nothing to be ashamed of, Lucy. I am now just relieved that, at last, here is a place where those of us who acquired our pups in a less than perfect manner can come in and be honest.
There is loads of good and friendly advice on these forums, but some threads can sometimes turn a little judgemental and heated, even though intentions at the outset may have been good.
Helen.

Di, You tell it like it is! Good on you!
I am one of the people who should have known better than to buy a puppy from an unknown breeder with parents of an unknown history...and financially I AM paying for itand Pablo will suffer without extensive treatment.
I think there are people who come on to LF and ask advice and when they get it, then persist on arguing against that advice or continuing to justify their actions, which THEY obviously feel guilty about. No one here is judging them, only passing on sound advice and experience often born out of a great deal of experience, heartache or both!
But.. at the same time no-one is going to say 'Great choice, you could have gone for a pup from hip tested parents etc. but you didn't.' I think people disappear from the board because they haven't got the answer they wanted, no-one can tell them that it is 100% going to be fine.
We all know about heart ruling head etc. and the breeders being ' lovely people whose dog accidentally got mated!' Surely what we are about on LF is education, education, education, and we fail our dogs and those of the future is we don't continue to hit home the message about breeding healthy, happy pups. If in the process of this, the tone is at times a little forceful...So be it! We are nothing if not passionate !

Jules, the breeder would have taken the bitch back - but a) she's at the other end of the country and b) we had thoroughly bonded with the bitch after 2 months - we couldn'[t have let her go - although with only 1 week to prepare for the whelping, it was a very steep learning curve! (I was a midwife in my youth, but puppies are a bit different... ) Then of course we thorougly bonded with the pups...we actually chose to donate one to "Hearing dogs for the deaf" and he went at 6 weeks - OH was in floods of tears, I've never seen him so distraught... However he was a very proud man a year later, when we went to see the dog "do his stuff", so all was well in the end.

We made a conscious decision to rescue and choose a lab who had no previous health history. I knew if she had any probs she was better off with me regardless. She has no probs at the mo (touch wood) but if she does in the future she will get the best care by us and the best advice and support from LF.
