As CD is an uh hum ... rescue ... I don't know whether his parents were health tested but probably not.
I feel that a lot of people may find this site 'after' they have taken a dog into their 'forever home', so it is a bit late then. This applies to puppies and rescues. I didn't look for a site until 'after' I had CD in my sight
However, having said that, this site gives a lot of information and there are so many people willing to help new owners that I think that outweighs any negatives. I would also like to say to any new owners, with health tested labs or not, come and give your opinions. I know I am a bit mouthy but hey, I am still willing to learn and even new owners have thoughts and ideas we can all learn from!!!!
After I got CD I did ask the vet what sort of problems they have and was told about HD (same as beardies (Floss had what I call clicky hips but never had her xrayed as I was not going to breed from her)), elbow displacia (don't know if that is in beardies) and eye tests (same as beardies). As for entropian, I think that is inherent in many breeds!!!
If people can be persuaded to buy puppies from health checked parents, that is great but I know that the people on here will not censure them if they don't!!!!

Di I'm really pleased you raised this here after we talked about it - it's so valuble for people like me who NEEDED that help and guidance after following their hearts even though they knew in their heads they were doing the wrong thing for whatever reason but feel they can't back out of the sale nor stick around here.
This is why I find it very difficult to participate in discussions on health testing...I agree implicitly with health testing yet I have a puppy lying here at my feet whose parents were not health checked and I found LF well before my puppy came home. I received some very sound advice to counter all the decisions I had made up to that point when I brought her home at a tender young age and I will forever be in those people's debt.
I am painfully aware that we aren't out of the woods yet regarding her future health but I know that environmentally, I have done the best I can in a vile situation. As it is so close to my heart, I remember there being many posts over the past 11 months where people have come here, asked for advice on a litter that was out of non health tested parents and after they have received their advice, they leave and never come back....not because they were attacked necessarily but because they can't live with the shame of people knowing that they asked for the advice and then went against it - probaby.
It isn't publicised about Phoebe's origin and the manner in which I obtained her; only a handful of people here know because either they helped me from the day I brought her home because I was desperate or we have developed a friendship that has meant they are trusted enough to know this information and to not judge me. You know I'm not proud of it but I am hopelessly devoted to my dog no matter what. It's just next time, I am doing it the right way and I don't CARE who knows it. Now THAT I will shout from the rooftops.

I agree with all of that, Lucy. It took me a long time to begin admitting publicly on LF that I did not do things the correct way, but I adore my lab no less because of it. I would do it differently next time, but Charlie is still a valued member of my family who needs cared for like any other.

I'm not prepared to discuss it here Hilary, no offense to you but I'm just not ready to share it as I am ashamed of it. One day I'm sure I will, just not yet - like I say, the only people who know are those who helped me initially 11 months ago or those who have become friends of mine since and I trust implicitly.

Excellent Post Di
When i started looking for a lab 2 and a bit years ago, it could so easily have gone the other way, I did phone a newspaper advert up they didn't have any pups left. Someone i knew gave me a phone number and from that call i was put intouch with the breeder of my two i was very lucky
If i had gone the other way and got a pup from the newspaper advert and came on here and asked for advice and the replies were not very nice, i would not have come back, i am not a confrontational person and i would have been to embarrassed thinking i'd done the wrong thing.
I really hope if people read this, that they do come back for help and advice.

Great well thought out post, as per usual Di.
Lucy, you have nothing to be ashamed of no matter where you got Lucy from, or at what age.
We all learn through experience and as you said yourself, that is one experience you won't be repeating.
I bought my first dog (as an adult) on a whim from a petshop (I'd only gone in to get some cat food) and she was only 5 weeks old. My heart ruled well and truely over my head that day, as I felt so sorry for this poor little worm ridden scrap, so I parted with my money and took her home.....I didn't even have any food for her (all the money I had on me went to pay for her), she had to have fish fingers for tea . Thankfully she was as hardy as they come and I had very few vets bills from her, although her puppy biting was extreme for almost two years ( I always wondered if that was due from her coming away from her siblings at such a young age)....and I daren't mention about the chewing she did; if only I had known about crates then .
I would never dream of buying a pup from a petshop now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.....shame we don't have foresight too, eh.
