Hmmm not sure how people may react to my story of how I obtained Bruce after reading these posts ...but here goes.
We had wanted a puupy for quite some time, but didn't like the idea of buying out of a newspaper. So we asked at our local vets if they knew of anyone who may have puppies at the moment (we hadn't even got an idea what breed we wanted at that time)The vet nurse gave me a list of numbers and we rang the one at the top of the list.We were told that our little pup was 11 weeks old and because he wasn't a purebred pedigree but a crossbreed he was free to a good home.He was the last of the litter (his mum had 13 pups..only three of which survived they think poor mum may have acidently suffocated the others). The couple had three other dogs and ran a guest house so didn't have the time or space for puppies. The mother had been 'caught' by the next doors collie dog on the first day of her very first season.
We have now had Bruce for 2 weeks.the vet assures us that the couple we got him from are reputable people and that their other dogs are healthy as is Bruce.
There ya go that's my story

Don't get me wrong Brucesmum, I have nothing against X breeds, my first dog was a cross breed. But you have been told a story! The bitch was NOT caught on the first day of her season, far more likely on the 10th to 16th day. That is not bad luck, it is negligence. A bitch will almost never stand for a dog on the first day, and certainly could not conceive at that point.

Did the person deliberately allow their bitch to be mated? Possible, yes it does happen. Of did they not bother to check if the bitch was in season? Did they not notice a week of blood spots on the floor? Don't know.

You say "the vet assures us that the couple we got him from are reputable people and that their other dogs are healthy as is Bruce." Has either been health tested? If not then the vet can have absolutly NO IDEA about that point. Those of us who organise the health testing for the breeders do not do it for no reason, believe me. I've been organising canine eye testing for the last 20 odd years and would not be doing that if it was a simple matter of just going to the vets.

I hope things work out for you, but I would also take out vet insurance, just in case.

Regards, John

all dogs no matter what breed etc need loving homes Smile we are all dog lovers on here and yes some do things differently.
Here i feel is a site devoted to the lab breed but no matter when/how your got your pup you are a member of the team.
I do love and read with great detail the posts from breeders/long time lab owners as they share their knowledge to us the less experienced to love our dogs, get the best from them and up to date medical needs.
No-one is perfect and no-one should have to feel otherwise in my eyes esp on the site...
Few points i have to make
1- if you ask for advice, be prepared to take both good and bad
2-opionions- pmpl they are like shockwaves everyone is like every dog and is different
3- ENJOY YA DOG !!!

Brucesmum Lea. Her breeder said the bitch was caught on the first day of it's season, but a bitch would not be fertile at that point. It simply never happened like that.

To answer you John, yes the mother is pure lab and had been health tested herself. As for being told a story I can only tell you what the couple concerned told me.I am not totally naive and have health insurance for all my animals (Bruce and my cat) and have been taking Bruce for regular check ups as I will continue to do.I realise you only have the dogs welfare at heart and have not taken offence, but can I just say in defence that my mum and dad had a dog for 14 years when i was younger,he was a foundling heinz 57 and only visited the vet twice in his whole life.He was perfectly healthy.I don't beleive I have acted irresponsibly and will love and care for Bruce the very best I can for however long he is with us.I look forward to receiving and acting on any advice from breeders/owners such as yourself and thank you for your comments.
Best wishes
Terri (aka Brucesmum)
