No we didn't see the vet before the insurance period. Hopefully they will cover.
Am speaking to the vet today re: pain relief for Bruce.
We still don't know the name of the specialist we will be referred to. We're in Glasgow and Bruce sees the Taylor Vets who have always been very good. Apparently Bruce's case is being referred to the vet school (in Bearsden?)
I will subscribe to this forum. Information so far has been priceless.
Thankyou

Hi
Really sorry to hear about Bruce. It is all too common in Labs.
Hugo is my 10 month old Choc Lab and he was diagnosed about 3 months a go. Since then we have only been able to walk him twice per day for 10 mins on the lead so it has been very boring for him.
Yesterday I collected Hugo after having had a total hip replacement and I was pleasantly suprised in how lively he is. I am having trouble in keeping him calm and the success of the operation is dependant on his after care so it is imperitive he does not run or jump. Today I have spent the whole day in the lounge with him. We have been told that he has to remain in 1 room for 6 weeks, the room must be carpeted so he can't slip and in the garden on the lead only. I have a feeling it is going to be a fairly long 6 weeks!! Hugo will have his stitches out in 10 days and in 6 weeks he will have more xrays to make sure there are no problems with his new hip.
As for the cost, the total bill yesterday was £4,100 and we have already claimed £700 pounds worth of medication, vets visits and xrays etc and being covered upto £4000 we had to pay £800 yesterday. Hugo is on Metacam which is a pain killer and also antibiotics. But so far so good. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, I hope this has been helpful and best of luck.

Hi Bev
I hadn't realised that Hugo was having his hip done yet.
I'm really pleased that the op went well and hugo is recovering ok.
As you say the after care is imperative to his long term recovery, but really worth all the extra care.
I'm not sure whether or not you saw the video of Charlie I put on here the other day - link above so that you can see how well they do with new hips.
Good luck for the next 6 weeks keeping him calm!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I am sorry for you and Bruce , I too have a chockie boy due to have a hip replaced within the week (is it me or are there more chocolates with the condition?) he has not shown the awful lameness and pain so many present with but he is on painkillers now (previcox) and syniquin supplements, as they felt he is in pain but would have just become used to it
Wendy's health site is wonderful, as is she, thanks to Wendy, I knew what to ask yesterday when I saw the specialist and it really helped, I made a list of her questions and took them with me, as I knew my mind would be blank once we were there,
As to insurance we have only had Jake since Jan 13th (oh thats an unlucky number) he is just coming up for 16 months old, so we too were very worried but I have been assured that because nothing showed, it was not even the reason for the initial vets visit so nothing indicated a hip problem, we are thankfully ok but I did ring them just in case, not haveing that extra worry is a huge relief, so maybe a quick call to your insurers will do the same for you.
Good luck, keep us posted.
Bev I'm so glad Hugo is home safe, that side of things is another worry the recuperation period....
The advice and experience of others going through this is such a help, as are the wonderful hugs and vibes you get on LF, glad your joining Bruces mum, it is so worthwhile
heres a hug from me and Jake {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
